Re: do hedgehogs make noise?

They certainly do. I know someone who once called the police, believing that a murder or something was taking place in the woodland behind their house. The police found mating Hedgehogs!

Hedgehogs can make a dickins of a noise snufflings and gruntings
lovemaking is almost alarmingly noisey especially on a dark caravan site

Re: do hedgehogs make noise?

I almost dug into a hibernating Hedgehog a couple of years ago, it was snuggly burrowed in beneath a perenial which I was planning to move, and it's fallen leaves. However, as soon as I started to distburb the area I was 'told off in no uncertain terms' by the resting Hedgehog and left it be.

Re: do hedgehogs make noise?

I found one with it's back ripped open on a barbed wire fence. Wouldn't have seen it but it alerted us with a very loud trumpeting noise so we managed to save it. Also heard terrible screams in the night, it was a Badger trying to kill a Hedgehog.

Although i agree hedgpigs make a noise when mating as i have witnessed this act many times on my lawn i cant believe the snuffling and grunting be that loud to think it was a murder...on the other hand foxes can sound like a young woman being battered and raped quite easily which can sound terrible some nights i would imagine this is what they heard but then saw the hedgepigs mating and decided it was them?

Re: do hedgehogs make noise?

There are a lot of baby Hedgehogs born late this year, and they will squeak when in trouble and are quite loud, they need to be brought in and kept warm with food untill you find a carer which can be found on this site.
Hedgehogs Help and Advice
just ask for help if you need it.
I would put some chopped peanuts out in a little pile, and see if any turn up. Pauline.

Re: do hedgehogs make noise?

Do they squeak at other times.. I suspect they were just wandering around the front garden.. the droppings I posted about a couple of weeks ago are back again so if they were hog poos then they are making whoopie in my garden

Re: do hedgehogs make noise?

I think they tend to squeak when they are cold or hungry, any babes found this time of the year under 500 grams can not survive hibernation and should be taken to a carer or wildlife centre, sounds like your little hoggies need help. Pauline.

Re: do hedgehogs make noise?

If they are little then they'll be ok at the mo unless it gets colder. You'll have to get out there with your torch Jackie, you may bump into your mystery pooper too! My mum's dogs are always first to find hedgiepigs. One will dig a ditch all the way round them and yap non stop!

Re: do hedgehogs make noise?

I didn't know Badgers killed Hedgehogs! Do they eat them or am I missunderstanding? Is it just that Badgers eat the same food and so they are mutually exclusive?

Re: do hedgehogs make noise?

I suppose a hungry Badger will eat anything it can get! As I recall it was a hot summer and it was probably having trouble getting it's usual food and moisture.

Badgers will regularly take Hedgehogs + Foxes sometimes take young ones.

Re: do hedgehogs make noise?

So when do Hedgehogs hibernate? I am assuming it varies according to region?

Re: do hedgehogs make noise?

they seem to be going into and coming out of hibernation later and earlier with milder winters.
