Simply seems to be no genuine will power by the authorities to do something about about. Not against it in its time and place ie the real November 5th. Seems now that if someone's pet mouse has babies they have to let off fireworks to celebrate.

I agree. The awareness was always made when i was a lad. Know theres no awareness but far more explosives! To boot there not familly/ Friend functions where a get together was the simple sociable thing. Now it's a competion on which firework can make the biggest unsocable din!

as you started honeybee i will carry on,i wasnt on here last year so i will say my piece,last year it was hell in my back garden a good six weeks befor guyfawks,my avery birds were terrified,i had to lock them in most nights,this year its been quite peacefull only had about three lots of bangers going off,mind you i dare say they will make up for it on the 5th,last year there was a dissplay right behind the avery i just hope its not the same this year.

I started this thread last year and am gratified to find that so many people agree with me. Personally I love firework displays and am not against them at all. I am against the sale of them to the general public.

I hope that everyone who has posted to this thread will write to their MPs requesting action.

The fireworks have just started around here this week when they started to go on sale. Last night at 23:30 and again today at about 14:00.
I do enjoy a good firework display and like some others I feel they should not be sold to the general public.

I don't have a problem with them if they are used with respect and I do think they are a bit too loud now. But so far this year I have hardly heard any! Makes a change.

Hate fireworks, they should all be banned except perhaps at liscensed, organised displays and only on the traditional bonfire night. We never used to have fireworks at new year until the year 2000 then they started selling them every new year, it's ridiculous. The law counts for nothing, kids are letting them off in the street, throwing them at houses and people, they're explosives for goodness sake, they're highly dangerous. In America, in many states they are totally banned and for good reason. It's fine for the government in Downing street living in their little bubble but this is the real world and people are getting injured, animals terrified and sometimes deliberately tortured with fireworks. In some areas the situation is bordering out of control with certain shops willing to flout the law and sell dangerous explosives to children.

I live in north Surrey not far from the likes of Kempton Park, Sandown Park, and Hampton Court and a few other similar places that hold regular special occasions. All of these events are rounded of with a fireworks display that usually starts around 10.30pm. These sort of organised events go on throughout the year.

Just down the road from me there is a household that seems to have something to celebrate fairy regularly thorugh the year too. Add to that the Indian population who celebrate Diwali and the post Millennium fad for setting off fireworks at midnight on New Years Eve/Day, it is all getting a bit noisy around here.

I enjoy a good firework display as much as the next person, but this year round obsession rather takes the impact out of Bonfire Night.

I stand to be corrected but isn't it a criminal offence to let off any fireworks without a licence more than five days either side of the 5th of November. I know this used to be the case, just wondered if it has changed recently with terrorist legislation etc.

I wonder how many youngsters nowadays know why we have Bonfire Night?

Fireworks cause cruelty not only mentally to pets and wildlife but alos the elderly who really dont wanna live thru memories of war again. But what are the government doing selling blooming hand held bombs anyway because this is what they are they are hand held explosives. How dare they not care. The moan about care and animals rights and the mentally ill. Yet each year we r subject to horrendous noise. I live in a city and i had alsmost a pannick attack and had to seer my gp to get tablets to prpare me 4 all the noise. Am gald to say though that some very understanding mates took me and my husband to a countryside pub to get away from it all. My pets had to stay at home adly but we managed to close hallway doors and windows 4 them. My hamsters had to go to the bathroom to stay out of the way. AM sick of it every year. I managed to not hear the fireworks when we were taken out of the city. When i came back i was relieved wed managed to escape the flipping nasty bangs and noises. I want to get the elderly and pet owners to sign large petitions in my city. Any one know how to set this up???

thanks will sign the pettition am fed up of myself due to pannick ahving to get myself out of Bath city to escape the noise levels. Lasdt night i managed to go to a countryside pub and didnt hear a thing thank God 4 that. When i came back my mates said that it was like a War Zone with bangs and nopise levels were extreemy high. I bet the wildlife hated it. Gosh this government r disgraceful and a load of hypocrites to allow this to go on year after year!!!

I am glad you said that Adam.I too thought the same especially in the last month.My poor dog hates loud noises and she goes around the house trying to find a hiding place where she cannot hear them.My grandchildren now go to Proper displays now,whereas myself and my children used to enjoy firework night in our garden,but nowadays with the fireworks and rockets louder bigger and noisier unless you have a large field then they are much more dangerous.Mind you in those days it was on November 5th unless that day fell on a Sunday and you let them off on a Saturday or Monday.
Around our estate it has been nearly every night either behind us or in front.It has driven me nuts as well as the dog.At least when you know its only for one night you can make sure your animals are safe.We lost our kitten Saturday night and it wasnt until yesterday we heard where she was.She must have been frightened and gone down another street and she was spotted cowering undera hedge and a lady took her in.She put her out the next day but the kitten stayed around near her garden.We were told about a lady finding our kitten and we were re-united with her.She is 6 months old now and when we got her our dog wasn't impressed but even she missed her and followed her back into the house where they rubbed noses in greeting.Mind you they do that a lot now although the dog still chases other cats
