Re: fireworks

I do love displays but wouldn't miss them and as you say they are now going off every night. I wonder if anyone has done research into the pollution effect over Britain during the week of bonfire night - considering what goes into bonfires especially the council ones. I have been out some years and the pollution is so bad it affects breathing. I'm surprised no-one has mentioned g.w but would it have any effect.

Plus the noise nowadays is horrendous - I'm sure windows are going to break soon round here!

Re: fireworks

It looks a lot of money here. You pay a license ££ to sell a lot of bonfires; never mind if children might be burned or loose an eye. Curiously the nanny state sees more dangerous to play with conkers than play with fireworks . Maybe conkers dont give enought money after all.

Now the vets may earn more, selling sedatives to dogs.

Finally never mind the risk on people, the stressed animals or the wildlife if this is a big busines

Re: fireworks

I'm showing my age here but in my childhood (and that of my children), many years ago, there was no restriction on who could sell them but it was usually newsagents-tobacconists (the same ones that sold woodbines individually) although some were fussy about who they sold to. Now, in Sheffield, people open up shops for three months of the year to sell nothing but fireworks.
As I said earlier, I never saw fireworks as a problem in London but since coming to Yorkshire I've been amazed and appalled at the numbers sold and exploded whenever ... and it's right, in most cases these are parents (presumed adult) who go for the bangers ... terrifying small children, annoying the neighbours but 'having fun'?

Surely it doesn't take a genius to realise that the local youths who have no way to get into town, must be buying them there. Probably getting an older boy to go in and then pass them around the younger ones (like they do with alcohol and ciggies).

Just wait until I'm in charge of the universe. I'll ban them, and fast cars that make a huge noise, and chain saws on Sunday mornings, and shouting in the street after midnight, and people who ring me or knock on my door and ask me personal questions like 'do you own this house,' and call me by my first name, just wait...Ha-ha-ha-ha....

The worst thing about being in charge of the universe is that you can't tell anyone because if they find out you are in trouble, you just have to sit there quietly and do nothing and hope that no one will notice.

Re: fireworks

I have to say i like fireworks......but not every evening. I think the sale of them should definatly be more controlled as like many people have said before, local idiots and youth get hold of them and wreck havok.

There was a time about 3 years ago when Chris (onionade) myself and some friends were walking to a friends after the pub shut, in Bristol. All of a sudden there were lots of loud screams and bangs, it took a few seconds to register what was happening..........kids were firing fireworks at us! One of them exploded only about 5 meters in front of a friends face.
Needless to say we ran all the way to the house.

Also about 2 years ago, some some idiots from my sisters class in school threw a lit firework through my parents letterbox and it shot right under the couch . Luckily they were in so the house didnt go up in smoke!
My sister overheard some boys in her class talking about getting some houses with fireworks, 1 of them lived round my parents area. (My sister hadn't done anything to upset/annoy them off btw)

I am certain that you can not sell from a lorry. The legislation requires that you register a premises to store fireworks. A lorry is not a premis. This is why you can not sell fireworks at car boot sales or from market stalls. The legislation is enforced usually by Trading Standards but occasionally in Unitary Authorities by Environmental Health. The Police do not have an enforcement role, except for the storage of ammunition, and so would quite happily drive past the vehicle not realising anything is wrong.

Re: fireworks

Fireworks and the inevitable bangers of the old days were bad enough for animals, but now irresposible youngsters are getting hold of industrial-size monsters. The 'bang' has to be heard to be believed, it literally shakes your windows.
They think its really funny to use them to blow telephone boxes and cars.
When it comes to the notice of the media its reported as a 'prank'.

Someones going to get seriously hurt. Last year a large rocket was aimed into a dance-club, you can imagine the panic and fear it produced. The fire brigade were called out to douse the flames that took hold.
Only one newspaper refrained from using the word 'prank', it used the words 'high spirits' instead.

When the police come across a hidden amount these mammoths, they realised someone was about to make one mega-huge blast that could easily destroy surounding property.

Its time Guy Fawkes was laid to rest..for good!

Re: fireworks

A question for the folks who would like them banned; would you prefer the idiots who abuse them to be using illegaly bought amauture manufactured fireworks?

Banning them would certainly stop respectable families who enjoy a modest display at home on Bonfire night, but it wouldnt stop the idiots. Prohibition never works.

I don't think they'd be clever enough and at least they would be doing something illegal and could be stopped if caught, it's these little antisocial thugs that let them off in the street that probably smash your car up and spray graffiti etc. I don't think a respectable family's going to buy contraband or botch some up in their shed.

Who's they?

Drugs are manufactured in Columbia and afghanistan, they know what they are doing.

Non-CE fireworks will be manufactered in China, Myanmar, or other places. The walking ASBO wont necessarily have to make them, they just have to source them.

Doing what you describe, they are doing something illegal and can be stopped anyway.

I know they wont. They will stop using fireworks. The walking ASBO wont stop regardless of what the law says, he'll just pay an inflated price to people similar to crack sellers, or contraband tobbacca importers and he will still have his fun.

The only people who will be puinished is that respectable family who will no longer be able to have a modest display once a year.

If people think that banning something takes it off the street they are sorely mistaken.

Re: fireworks

I quote you... "amauture manufactured fireworks"
I took that to mean some kids botching some together themselves.
If somebody takes drugs they usually do it in private, when soembody lets a firework off everyone can hear it for miles and also see it...if it were illegal for anyone to have fireworks then whoever was letting them off would hopefully be caught and dealt with whearas now it's not treated seriously enough.
I also imagine a megarocket would be harder to conceal going through customs than a million quids worth of crystal meth.

Re: fireworks

Some of them will be amatuer manufactured fireworks, some will be illegaly imported. I apologize for not specifying that in my original post.

To think that once banned they would dissapear is niave.

There is already an underground market for almost every illegal substance, and also for every high-tax commodity excluding petrol. Ban fireworks and they will just be added to the list of things to try and stop at customs.

The only time prohibition works is when it is aimed at highly regulated industry consumption, such as the DDT ban.

It's still there I might add. It's a container off of an articulated lorry, illuminated sign and lit up. Couldn't get it more obvious to the public really. If I go past during the day, I'll pull up and get a shot of it. Then run........

I never said that.

To ban firework sales to the general public would stop a lot of noise (of which I'm currently being bombarded by) and fear amongst the elderly and animals. It would cut down dramatically on the accidents that can occur even amongst the responsible.

Re: fireworks

Why oh why do we want to buy and set off fireworks, they cost a fortune. An organised firework display is free and there are plenty to chose from.
In these days of Terrorist activity shouldnt we be doing as much as possible to remove explosives from our streets. We havent bought fireworks for years yet still we enjoy firework displays. its about time this government got their heads out of the sand and banned the sale of fireworks to the public and stop the many accidents and deaths that occur every year putting strain on not only wildlife but our stretched national health service.
god knows what a flock of migrating birds must see from above as they are fired at by numerous fools who have money to burn, "Literally"

Re: fireworks

We musnt forget to search the Bonfire heap before lighting it as small animals such as Hedgehogs like to try and hibernate in them, i was watching this on the TV yesterday, always check before lighting otherwise you might get roast Hedgehog which wouldnt be very nice.

Also putting netting around a just made one will help as it reduces the need to check them for unsuspecting inhabitants

Just thought i would add this advice but i know most of you know already i hope!

Re: fireworks

OH NO!! I must have done the wrong dance or something or i have upset the weather fairy?.I have been rain dancing all week and today its bright & sunny here and Not RAINING ..And to make matters even worse my neighbours from hell three doors up..remember the "have to haves"(biggest four wheeled drive with huge lights on the front, the sqeeliest noisiet motorised thing every christmas and every big boys toy going so long as it annoys everyone around)You don't know these people? oh come to sunny Essex theres loads!Anyway these moved in our lovely sane street this year and they really haven't looked back!.just as i fed my birds this morning a huge plastic girraffes head appeared above the fences looking at me.The obvious top of a bouncy castle,"oh god" i thought: Now i would never want to spoil any childrens fun but the thought of this lot tonight getting totally drunk in their garden(as they normally do ) launching god knows what he's bought into the air with probably the loudest explosion he can find at any cost legal or not fills me with dread. Not for me i can go out and dance the night away at a rock and roll club(yes they still exsist!) and other than the odd distant boom over the top of the music i wont know a thing. But as i drink my morning tea i am looking at my lovely blue tits and great tits feeding happily and thinking "gosh what a bad night you are in for".And my beautiful foxy lady my friend for years raised her last four cubs in a den just the other side of "their" garden in the woods.she gives me such happiness and i cant protect her and hers tonight.I will hope she visits really early and i will give her loads of food and hope they all go to bed early and are safe. And the poor neighbours next to the ones from hell: retired here to this "quiet "street just six months earlier than "them" this poor couple are not in good health live a quiet life with their very old and doddery old english bulldog who bearly manages to walk to the end of the road these days. What a bad night they are in for. Some happy soul was launching rockets at 4.30am this morning much to the joy of every living creature around. And people say they shouldn't be banned?????????Enjoy your evening
