Robin in a Hoodie

A new Robin Hood series starts on the Beeb on Saturday. I saw some clips from it this morning and I dunno... They're trying for a 21st Century take on the story apparantly (??). Not so much Robin Hood as Robin in a Hoodie as the newscaster put it. Hmmm...

Who is your Robin Hood?

For me its Michael Praed/Jason Connery in Robin of Sherwood. Loved the Hearn connection, the atmospheric Clannad music and OK I'll admit it both the actors who played the part were both gorgeous

The new one, well of course I'm going to watch it anyway but I have a feeling I'm gonna miss that magic.

Richard Green for me - and I hope the kids get as much fun from the new series as we did from the old one. A bit of escapism with a moral tale in there somewhere is quite a good combination.

I'm with you on that one Sheryl, even have the Clannad CD from the series. And Hern, my Man But then Cernunnus goes very Deep. From the trailer shown I'm not sure I'll be watching it all the way through.

Yeah, although Cernunnus comes from the Celtic tradition and Robin/Robert was said to have been English so Anglo Saxon, I still loved that.

The name 'Robinhood' or 'Robehod' occurs from 1261 onwards in English doucments and was used as shorthand for an outlaw, so originating from a time when the 'old ways' were still to some extent part of the culture of the time. Even if the Christian tradition was heavily in the process of eclipsing them. For the English under Norman/Christian overlordship, it seems reasonable that such an outlaw would defiantly hold to the ways of their Anglo Saxon roots and beliefs.

I daresay there will be none of that in the new series.

Re: Robin in a Hoodie

An interesting book on Robin Hood, "Robin Hood: Green Lord of the Wildwood" by John Matthews, pub. Gothic Image. ISBN 0-906362-24-5. If you're in to him as I think you are, it's well worth the read.

Cernunnus is even older that the Celts, he goes back to the time of the Long Ice.

Tell me more, honeybee, as I haven't read any S.C. books. She doesn't ring any bells. What's she like?

I'm very interested in the history of these Islands we now call Britian, both natural and cultural. On the natural side the time of the Wildwood is particularly compelling to me.

My favourite human historical period is the so called Dark Ages, dating from "The coming of the English" in 410 CE after the Romans finally gave up defending our shores (woohoo!), up untill 1066 when flippin' William of Normandy spoilt it all again

Robin Hood is a bit late for me but I still find the story very interesting. Historically speaking I totally give up with the Tudors. Its the wild times for me

Cernunnus, even older that the Celts you say. Where can I find out more?

The book you mention sounds interesting, I'll look out for it and honeybee regards the Susan Cooper books, do tell

Written by Tony Robinson BTW - the one of Blackadder and Time Team fame, I think. It would explain a lot. Arf!

Re: Cernunnus
As I don't feel settled in my flat, I've stiil book & papers in boxes. Give me time & I'll get some info to you. One thing I do know, is that images of him have been found in Denmark, Norway & Sweden, dating from around 8000 BC. pre Celtic arrival in Northern Europe.

I'll get into the cupboard over the weekend & see what I can come up with for you.

It sure is the wild times for me as well

Re: Robin in a Hoodie

I loved watching Robin Hood on telly in the 80s but there was something about the story that never quite sat right with me. Give me Beowulf, Ivan Hoe or even King Arthur (if it is not too Victorianised and pretty) any day.

Two good sites for Beowulf are: The Adventures of Beowulf & BeowulfTranslations.net: Start Page

And it's Ivanhoe

Re: Robin in a Hoodie

Amazon.co.uk: The Dark Is Rising Sequence: Over Sea,Under Stone; The Dark Is Rising; Greenwitch; The Grey King; Silver on the Tree (Puffin Books): Books: Susan Cooper

(also on abebooks)

It's a sequence of books (ment to be for kids but very well written and not childish) and they all have different characters/settings but it's a sort of search for the holy grail and light versus dark with hern the hunter type characters. Really exciting and dark but not over the top, bit more believable than lord of the rings.

P.s think they were written in the 70's, the older covers are better, not as trashy looking.

I can just about remember the series in the 80's with Michael Praed & Jason Connery. Can't remember much about it, only that I liked it. Think I was about 6 at the time! I can remember I liked the music to it though.

Re: Robin in a Hoodie

Does anyone know the spoof film called Robin Hood men in tights. It's very silly but hillarious if you dont want to see a serious version. The Sherrif is very funny, "he deered to kill the kings dare" - You know what I mean if you've seen it

A little bit cringeworthy when you watch it now. Shakey sets and what not but I still have a real soft spot for the spirit if the thing.

I used to really love a series called "The Tomorrow People" when I was a kid (before your time I expect). I tried to watch a re-run of that a little while back I guess when I saw it the first time my imagination did most of the work
