| Methane & the melting Permafrost With the permafrost melting now, frozen methane is being released. In some areas of Northern Siberia there are shallow lakes where there were none 10yrs ago, some of these lakes are on fire & some look like they are boiling.
The gas Methane is a far more powerful GHG than CO2, at least 20x and it is escaping in vast amounts from the decaying vegitation as the permafrost melts. Some folks tell us not to worry but others who are there studying the area say that because of possitive feed-back it's all speeding up & the amount being put into the atmosphere is much higher than expected.
Canadian researchers earlier this year noticed large amounts of methane in the air in study areas along the Mackenzie River, at the same time, reseachers in Siberia were noting the same, even filming the burning lakes.
I wish I'd kept the papers & pics, but at the time I only had the local library for computer access.
