Go ahead, dare I love Harry Potter too (especially with the wonderful Alan Rickman in the films - love his voice) and I'm not ashamed to say so. I wouldn't say its my main hobby but it warms the cockles... Nice to settle in of a rainy day in Autumn by the fire with a nice drink, a DVD or book and give the imagination some exercise and why the hell not I say

Fully agree, apart from Harry Potter, don't get that. Alan Rickman is great, "I'm going to cut your heart out with a spoon" "because it will hurt more"...........

The most memerable part of Robin Hood Prince of thieves........nice one.

Sheryl, not sure if you read the books and have theories, but I'm awaiting book 7, the last in the series.
Would put a link in to my site, but not sure if it's appropriate for his site, and wouldn't know who to ask permission from!!

I try not to have too many thories about it and just let the stories unfold as she writes them. If you don't want to post the link in this thread you can always send it to me by message. I'd be very interested to see your site

I didn't get Harry Potter at first either but I gave it another chance and it really grew on me. I was watching LOTR avidly at the time and couldn't make the jump at first.

I love that Rickman quote, brings it all back. He was real star of Prince of Theives, for sure. Talking about Robin Hood now, as we seem to be, I notice the Beeb are bring out a new Robin Hood series soon. Wonder what it will be like?

Oooh, dear this is going a bit too far off topic, not really what this thread is about. I'm terrible for doing that. Sorry.

Speaking of LOTR, great film though (should of used Alan Rickman as Gollum ), but the book is even more of a masterpiece, old man willow, Tom Bomberdill, and all those others that the film could not fit in.........

Re: I'm interested to know...

I love LOTR, books and films, but the Ents in the LOTR films were just not right! I'm a Harry Potter fan too, although not in the way I once was. The stories can be so engrossing and really helped me through a tough time a few years ago ... I wish you well, Little T.

Going off at a slight tangent .... are there any Discworld fans here? I love the Witches books, I wish there were more of them.

Re: Harry Potter

One of the mods must have moved this segment to a new thread. I thought I was losing my mind for a moment there. I saw my post and though Waaa?! I didn't start a Harry Potter thread... did I?

LOTR is my favourite book. When I first read it at 18 I just couldn't put it down, I carried the brick around with me everywhere and when I finished the last page I was utterly lost for a while. I know Tolkien wasn't English but my goodness he certainly captured the spirit of the Country in his writing.

I'll stop gushing now

There was a lot they left out of the films but it would have taken another 10 of them to include everything. I think they did very well really.

Yep, fully agree, think I was about 18 when I first read it and have read it about 5 times since and am well over due to read it again, but am working my way through all of Wilbur Smiths books and nothing is getting in the way of them.
What I couldn't understand with the film was, why did they change so many things, ie, it wasn't Arwen who met Strider and the hobbits traveling to rivendell,it was Glorfindel. When Frodo and Sam bumped into Farimir (sp?), (Boromir's brother) he didn't take them back to the city, as in the film, he let them go on their way. Also did you notice that orc with his mobile phone........

Not really true he wasn't English. Though he was born in South Africa, it was to English parents, and his mother brought him back here when he was about 5 years old. He spent most of his life working as an academic in Oxford.

Old Tom Bombadil is a merry fellow
Bright blue his jacket is, and his boots are yellow

I missed him from the film too, and his mrs, Goldberry, old man willow, the barrow downs and wrights, the old woods, huge part of the book missing, but like Sheryl said, it would take another 10 films to include it all. They did amazingly well, but could of picked some better characters. Elrond, no he wasn't, he was the nasty guy from the matrix, good in that, but too matter of fact in LOTR. Lady Galadriel wasn't as pretty as I had imagined her, she was played up big in the book. As mentioned, the Ents, far to hasty..........

I guess adding Glorfindel meant adding yet another character to a massive production. They can be forgiven so a few shortcuts unter the cercumstances of the massive task they were undertaking. Not too happy with them killing off Haldir (didn't happen in the book) but I guess tehy were aiming for some extra emotional empathy there. Legolas 'snowboarding' down the steps *cringe* but over all it was a wonder.

Missed the orc with the mobile phoe, where was that in the film? Inquiring minds need to know?

No, I'm glad you told me, I really didn't know that. I knew about his work in Oxford but havingh done a bit of Wikipedia-ing since reading your post, I stand corrected.

From Wiki:The Tolkien family had its roots in Saxony (Germany), but had been living in England since the 18th century, becoming "quickly and intensely English".

Thats interesting. With Saxon roots there is a deep kinship there to start with.

The only character that didn't work for me in the fim was Celeborn... He didn't... feel right and spoke artificially slowly.

You'll find plenty in Glastonbury, three women of the town make up the wyrd sisters. T.P. often gave talks in the Assembly Rooms and it was standing room only.

My daughter turned me on to T.P. & Diskworld in the early '90s.

I've yet to read Thud.

Slapped wrist for fibbing Jonny

Haldir - You meet him at the end of Fellowship... in the films as after some argument he agrees to lead the 9 into Lothlorian. In The Two Towers Haldir leads the the Lothlorien elves into to Helms Deep in the vain hope of holding off Saruman's massive Orc host. "We are proud to fight alongside men, once more.". He's is killed in battle by an nasty Orc clouting him over the head from behind. In Tolkien's books, Haldir does not appear in The Two Towers and his fate is never defined.

Gandlaf - from Wales.
Me - from the Shire

Interesting. I live in the West Country, am stocky & have hairy feet & hands. A lady friend's grandaughter calls me Bilbo Bagins or Bill Badger, I don't mind either. She was annoyed when I went from Bill to Will & told me, to her I'll always be BB

Don't know many Orcs, or come to that, many northeners.
Mordor: London on the button.
Rohan: The Dales or central Wales
