Re: wildlife imports

There's a Tristram's Grackle on the edge of Leamington at the moment. A Bald Eagle not so long ago in Cornwall and breeding Eagle Owls in Northern Britain just to name a few more.

Mink were well established in Britain long before the Animal Liberationists thought of releasing them. They escaped from fur farms, or were released from fur farms that went bust.

There is a long list of animals - the mammals include:

Rabbit
House Mouse
Black Rat (not many left)
Brown Rat
Edible Dormouse
Ferret
Domestic Cat
Muntjac
Sika
Fallow Deer
Chinese Water Deer
Wild Goat
Wild Boar

all seem to be established in the wild, and there are other one-off escapes and short term colonists incompletely documented.

John, please what is a one of those?

And while we are about it isn't the common Pheasant an introduced species, also Red-legged Partridge?

Re: wildlife imports

Wouldn't it be quicker to list those species that are indigenous to the UK? It seems there cannot be many.

Wildone
It is a type of Starling and their nearest territory to the UK is the SE of the Middle east, around saudi / egypt.

This bird has landed at a house belonging to a work colleague of my missus and she invited me around on Saturday. Thankfully it arrived just as we did and I managed about thirty photos of it, 4 of which I have attached.

But the trouble is, Fourwings, that some people are very bad at observing, and a lot of reports of 'big cats' are clearly nonsense. It's hard to sort the valid sightings from the mistakes.

Re: wildlife imports

observing takes practice very few people can judge distances accurately,
you do tend to find that the police and armed forces generally make the best observers as they are trained to do so
I have already suggested that wild about gives some tips on estimating size etc.

You are quite correct henrya, for every genuine sighting there has to been dozens of ones that are either clearly hoaxes/practical jokes or genuine cases of mistaken identification.

As nightshade has pointed out judging distance and size is not that easy & many "big cat" sightings are reported due to this, but my own sighting was from less than 10 feet away, close enough infact to smell the cat and boy do they smell bad, something like the tom-cat from hell!!
Without going into lots of detail about the sighting, I basically came literally face-to-face with it in our farmyard at 6:30 one December morning in 2003, the sighting lasted less than 30 seconds but what I saw will stay with me for the rest of my days thats for sure!!

Hi John, I am a little confused. Are these introduced birds or have they managed to arrive without the aid of humans? I thought this thread was about introduced species.

The above two (Tristam's Grackle and Bald Eagle) were escapees. The Pheasants were introduced. The thing is if you bring in a captive bird to this country you are introducing it to this country. It might forever stay safe in a cage but if it escapes it could, in theory, find a mate and and have offspring, as winessed with the Ring necked Parakeets that are now in their thousands.

BTW the Tristrams Grackle has now been captured and will be on its way to a recognised keeper of these birds in Hertfordshire.
