Canal & Riverboat or Waterways World are probably best places to look for info. Believe there are a few liveaboards along the Oxford canal .... not too far from MK

Don't walk on deck at night when you have had a drink or two!

I regularly pilot a 70ft narrow boat for my friend but never thought about living on one. Its so relaxing until you come to the locks!

Don't come to Wigan if locks are not your thing

The "Wigan Flight" on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal - 21 Locks in about a mile

This is wyrd I've been thinking of becoming a 'liveaboard' for some time, have been looking at both narrow & wide-berths on the K&A, at Honey Street, near Devizes.

At the moment I'm in a rush to catch a bus to Bristol, when I get the chance this evening I'll put some sites & info up. For now, check out Apollo Duck - Oops! for boat sales.

Re: Narrow boats

and at Devizes there is a "mega" flight of 29 locks to worry about!

In the meantime I am waiting for a substantial lottery win and either the Thames & Severn or the Hereford & Gloucestershire Canals to re-open.

Re: Narrow boats

A friend of mine once bought a narrowboat, spent rather a lot of money sprucing it up & making it fit for habitation. The day before he moved in, some fool ran into it on its mooring & sunk it....It wasn't insured.

Re: Narrow boats

There is at least one narrow boat owner/user on the site that I know of but I am not sure of his sign in
Waterworld on one of the Sky channels is very interesting as well

Re: Narrow boats

yeah that waterworld programme is good. People on prog who live in them have agas and everything, some are much bigger inside than they look. Love canals/narrow boats don't think I could live on one full time though.

No ideas where? Suppose the beauty of a boat is you don't have to stay in one place for long. You gonna be self employed then? Need a secretary?

Re: Narrow boats

I have a job int in epping on wednesday but I have also applied for jobs in bolton , warwick , and oxford - if none of those come off (unlikely ) then i might go self employed and relocate to the west country so you never know...

Re: Narrow boats

eeyore,

I'm sorry for not getting back to you yesterday but I had a long day travelling and when I looked for the bumf I found I hadn't got it here. When I get back to Wells I'll sort it out.

Keep hunting.

Re: Narrow boats

When I was little I always used to confuse narrow boats with long boats - gave me images of Vikings storming up the Grand Union Canal ....
I'm currently reading for my book at bedtime (which reminds me ......) "Narrow Dog to Carcassonne." about a couple taking their narrow boat over the Channel - I'm getting a bit queasy and they haven't even got out of the Thames yet. Anyone read it? Very funny in parts, scarey in others ....

Re: Narrow boats

One thing is for sure, there's is hardly any better way of getting a good look at the outdoors than navigating a narrowboat. Lovely.

Re: Narrow boats

A recent colleague (now out of touch) had live on a narrowboat. The only thing I remember from his remarks about it is that it is not as economical as one might imagine. I think the batteries can be a major expense. It might be significant that he had a 'private income'.
