| | Post Spamming As a new member I have just noticed the different titles given to members and it got me wondering about when these titles were given out.
I have therefore just been reading the forum FAQ and I came across this… Quote:
The following activities are forbidden...
Post Spam – adding short replies of just a few words, with the purpose of increasing one's post count...
| After reading some of the forum posts on the site it certainly looks like "post spamming" appears to go on - I have noticed certain members seem willing to post anything just to increase their post count therefore getting bigger and better titles. Members are then congratulating each other on making a certain number of posts and even racing each other to see who can get to a certain target first.
Now I am all for a bit of fun on forums and I don’t want to stop people posting (most members seem to post worthwhile comments) but there doesn’t seem to be anything done about people who are blatantly flouting the above rule!
To prove my point here’s a thread that I came across – just see how this innocent thread soon degenerates into post spamming… Just a bit of fun |

| | | Re: Post Spamming Judging by the way this thread has been put together by a 'NEW MEMBER' who seems to have got the hang of inserting smilies, links etc with consumate ease, I would suggest that it is infact from an existing member that has something they want to get of their chest and does not want to confront those that they are trying to antagonise.
I am sure admin will see the IP address matches that of a current member |

| | | Re: Post Spamming Personally don't give a damn how many posts I've made, didn't realise there was a competition. And as wild-woman says *most* people on here are very friendly and there seems to be a good rapport amongst most which helps make people feel comfortable in posting queries regarding wildlife..the other (non wildlife related) stuff is just a jovial sideline in my opinion. I think the bigger danger is hijacking somebody's thread which is easily done but people are pretty chilled out and hopefully don't mind too much. |

Actually...thanks as i wasnt aware of such a rule?...im certainly guilty of 1 line answers as are a lot if us....when the banter gets rolling and we are all having fun the quick one worders and one line replies fly out......im also guilty of lengthy boring long winded essay answers that are mostly waffle and little fact that im sure no one reads anyway ....but im not going to stop just because you dont like it?
I certainly dont post short or quick replies to boost a post count? most of the time i am unaware of my post count and was as surpised as others when i reached 500 and it was congratualted in the forum ...then i got another pm to congratulate my 666th?...its all a load of nonsense and just a bit of fun all this commander and stuff so dont get so worried about it all.
I think its a bit off to come here and attack people with your first ever post? most of us waited at least a few days before getting negative ! . |

By the way, the thread that was referred to was in March, I'd only been a member for a couple of weeks. How time flies!

In the interests of avoiding adding to my score with stupid irrelevancies, I will refrain from visiting this one agin. |

I think that as you know how to use forums well enough to use quotes and smilies and links, and you have been on here for quite a long time to drag up an old thread like that, me thinks you are an existing member on a strop or something, get a life......... |

| | | Re: Post Spamming This site is for communication... about wildlife... but if there cant be a bit of fun too, well what a shame... and shame on you Consa Vation as a first time poster to be moaning about a thread that was months old.
I am relatively new here and I post daily.. not to boost a post count.. that is just a bit of sillyness... and if the long term members will forgive me... If you dont like what you see you dont have to stay to see it. As someone else mentioned in this thread when I read your post I had the feeling it was someone who was already a member who was just having a gripe ...
ps
I sent dan the congratulations on his 666 post..I said I was being devilish... isnt 666 the number of the devil..I sent it in pm because it wasnt really something to start a thread about, had there already been a thread I might have done it that way.
So, Consa Vation, if you LIKE it here join in and ENJOY and welcome to WAB. |

In the interests of avoiding adding to my score with stupid irrelevancies, I will refrain from visiting this one agin. | I dont think he has missed the point , there is a difference between going back and forth in a discussion posting content, and posting only a few characters like " ^ " or similar - that is post bumping.
Nother point I always thought post spam was posting spam, eg " buy my nice shiny laser log on to www.gullible halfwit . etc" what we have in the post illustrated is post bumping , not spam
and finally I do tend to agree with boddie , johny an others consa vation's post does seem a bit too shiny and forum savy to be a first post - like the others me thinks that an established member is ghosting to make a point.
I would say to him , or her that I agree with much of what you say , but have the bottle to say it in your real name (or at least your real screen name )

Please folks, if you want this forum to be taken seriously, keep the funnies and off-topic for the treehouse or a separate thread.
Mr/Mrs/Ms Consa Vation has a valid point here. |

My personal opinion on this subject is that I want to be able to come to WAB and discuss wildlife and related issues with like-minded, enthusiastic individuals who share my passion. However, I don't wish to do this is in a very serious, sterile environment ... I want my visits to WAB to be enjoyable – educational, yes, but always in a light-hearted way. I think this applies to education in a wider sense - the more fun it is, the more inclined people are to get involved, and the education will come as a by-product of that. I have learned so much since coming to WAB from the guys and gals here, but it has also always been a fun place to come to, and long may it continue!
Incidentally, the "one-liner" posts that CV referred to, are very often an essential part of the 'fun' side of the site for me, and so when a witty retort to the last person's post pops into your head, post it, I say, and be damned!!
p.s. Why would anyone be here for over a year "in several guises" ...
p.p.s. Consa Vation seems conspicuous by his or her absence since that first post ... lost the courage of your convictions, CV - or just retreated quietly to your alter-ego?

Well done, Chalky,
I had a bad night's sleep, when I got up this morning, after a cuppa, I checked the site & found this thread. Yours brought a harty chuckle and has setup my day.

This isn't an academic website it's a community one - and just as in any community there's a place for not just serious subjects but light hearted ones too. People have individual personalities so the resulting thread or post comments often reflect this. The nature of a thread is often apparant at the start or even by the title, so it's up to the indiviual whether to add further comments or leave the thread and read another one more to their liking. This is the nature of forums I'm afraid so either live with it or find another forum - there are plenty of more serious or scientific ones out there if that's a persons calling, and I certainly go on many or these if needed.
In fact I often think a lot of people take this site too seriously, with some threads descending into silly circular arguments that result in too much friction that can often spill over into other areas of the site - but of course that's just my opinion as an individual!
So I say read, learn, comment and enjoy..
ps: I hope that's long enough not to be considered a one line post bump?!! |

Post spamming, does it really matter? There's no prizes, so who really cares?

To be fair CV is not having a go at the subject of the thread, but moreso the content, and at no time did he/she mention 'one liners' but moreso how the posts on it appear to be post bumping (as opposed to post spamming). Its an extreme example for a supposed new member to have found.
Again, I would suggest we again allow this thread to fall of the bottom of the boards by simply not adding to it, unless CV wishes to qualify their remarks? |
