| | | Bitten but not smitten ... I was working on a reserve in the burham marshes area of kent today in a huge disused chalk pit. There were a group of about 15 of us all busy scrub cutting ( yawn ) ...it was soon clear there were lots of midges/mozzies about but why was i the only one that got eaten to death? I react instantly to bites and come up in huge wealds....i have large bumpy bites all over my forearms....my back.....the back of my neck....all over my shaved head and a beauty on my forehead....im sporting a look John Merrick would envy!!...but why me? a couple of others had like one bite each?....Someone mentioned its to do with blood group? ( I dont know mine off hand before you ask!)..is there any truth in this theory or am i just correct in what i already knew? im an extremely tasy male specimen |

| | | Re: Bitten but not smitten ... Try drinking plenty of beer the night before Dan, that sometimes works (a good excuse anyway ), it's the vitamin B in it I believe. Don't drive though!! Of course you could have over active pheromones like me! That always attracts them, the mozzies too! It's such a chore |

I have been out with my partner and my dad taking photos in the countryside and I seem to be the only one that gets covered in bites. I can go out wearing long trousers and a long sleeved top and still get bites behind my knees, on my calf, my back, my tummy, at the top of my arms... everywhere! Also a couple of months ago I had a bite on my ankle which became infected...
and then a a few weeks ago I had a bite on my hand which also got infected and I ended up on antibiotics both times
Anyway I have bought some insect repellant so I'm going to see if that works...

| | | Re: Bitten but not smitten ... I too am covered in several bites, and all i did was queue up in the fish and chip shop on Monday night (admittedly the door was open!), but even so, i ended up with about half a dozen bites.
My OH rarely gets bitten, and he has read that people who eat marmite are less likely to be bitten. I hate it!!!!!!! with avengance, he loves it on his toast in the morning. He often fishes and never comes home with bites, where as I have to apply repelant just to go out in the garden!
If you like marmite, it could be worth eating it more often?

| | | Re: Bitten but not smitten ... When I go out in the summer, I always put a few drops of T-tree and Eucalyptus oils on the peak of my baseball cap (it MUST be genuine essential oil, though - Boots is a good place to get them) and the mozzies and various other bitey things steer clear of me |

| | | Re: Bitten but not smitten ... I think I am right in saying it is the pregnant mozzies that bite, as they need blood for the eggs to develop. In applying repellant or other strong smelling stuff it makes you in effect invisable to them.
I think Dan may be a mozzie magnet |

D | Of course it could be the insect equivalent of tiny swollen ankles and morning sickness that makes them want to bite someone . |
