WAB gallery - My take quality/quantity

There are lots of comments posted about the gallery - particularly why some images are rejected and this is my personal take on the subject:-

When WAB was launched StuDH and I were the only photographers. Some birds, flowers, butterflies were duplicated initially by us, but as time has gone by and better pictures have appeared I have been more than happy for my efforts to be deleted or rejected since I have every confidence in the gallery editors decisions, for whatever reason and particularly if the quality of my efforts was dubious (which it was!).

There is also the point about quantity to bear in mind, whether uploaded singley (day after day) or en masse. Unless there are few photographs on the site, of a particular subject, similar photographs of the same bird/flower/butterfly may become boring (ducks come to mind) to the viewers and may just deter new members from uploading yet another picture of the same subject, if there are already loads of similar images in the gallery – though the image of an animal, bird or flower taken perhaps at another time and from a different angle may have its place. If the editors reject my images – fair enough (I will not try to upload that image again). Personally, I do not request a reason for that decision – the editors have enough work to do.

I now tend only to upload images when I feel that the subject matter is unusual, even if my effort may be superseded and deleted by a 'better' picture in the future and in the meantime will try to improve my photographic skills. I appreciate that cropping and recropping to form a close-up is not the best way of producing a picture for the site. (Tips please!).

To all the Gallery Editors past and present – thanks for all your hard work and advice.

Re: WAB gallery - My take quality/quantity

Maybe the time has come for the galleries representing shots for id purposes, or as a record, be restricted to the shots accepted as good enough for the job by the editors, and a general members gallery for shots that aren't quite up to that high standard to be posted? I'm not knocking anyone's efforts - I've only just started seriously shooting macro, and have shots that while I'm proud of, I accept would not do for a definitive shot of a species. But a members gallery would allow all levels to participate, with a select few representing the species count?

And for all those who volunteer their time to making WAB what it is, I thank you all!

While I agree that very poor quality pictures should be discarded at the Gallery mod stage, I can’t help thinking like carlj, that quite a lot of people on this site enjoy seeing their photos in the gallery and receiving helpful comments about them, indeed this may be why they have come to the site in the first place, so to take that away, while being a boon to the gallery moderators, it might not be in the best interests of the site.
But as long as a decent enough time is allowed to lapse so that pictures can be allowed to receive feedback, then there should be no harm in weeding out the “not needed” ones.
Of course this has the added benefit of being almost like a prize. i.e. “Your picture is good enough to warrant it being given a permanent (for now) place in the gallery”.

Actually that is one of the most sensible of sujestions that I have sread to date. I think also the peson should be informed not just left in mid air
