| | | Re: Boddie?? Of course he does. He often refers to having a "sherbert" or few. You surely didn't think that was a child's sweet. Anyway I think his name is because he didn't know how to spell Body.

I looked at chunkychambers profile as others look at other's profiles and it say likes deer stalking on dartmoor'. I thought deer stalking was tracking and huting deer for the kill. That's why I was asking.

oh they really do there aren't really any natural predators and the young are very quickly too big for foxes in most species. In my local woods they really have done a lot of damage to the ground flora and understory just as they all try to find something to eat! |

| | | Re: Boddie?? Really? I'm not familier with dear hunting. I used to be very good a .22 target shooting when in the WRNS ( hundreds iof years ago) But I just couldn't shoot any thing live, So gave it up I couldn't even hook and octopus out of the sea in Malta and got black looks for letting it go (It was quite small) I just can't. I had a feeling deer caused a lot of dammage but wasn't sure

| | | Re: Boddie?? Venison is nice. No worries Beryl. Yes, Deer numbers can get very high very quickly. Deer are usually quite secretive so most people dont realise how many there are. Deer breeding biology is geered to them being predated by other mammals, formerly in this country man, wolves, possibly bears & Lynx. Now as we're the only carnivours left (with the odd fawn being taken by foxes & peoples dogs) deer numbers can get out of control & they can almost litteraly eat themselves out of house & home when numbers are very high. The only thing that controls the population then is starvation & disease, especially in hard winters. When deer numbers get high, the vegetation obviously suffers & this has a knock on effect on those species that depend on it aswell e.g butterflies & moths etc. It is true you do get stalkers that are interested in only in trophies, which is fine for them, but for me this is not what it is about. The idea is not to wipe out the deer but to try & manage them to get a good balance between the deer, the habitat & the other wildlife. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
