Do you have a scanner?

Many years ago I bought a scanner but it saw little use and occupied a needed USB port
so it was retired to a box in the attic, then I saw this

Re: Do you have a scanner?

I've used this technique (another name I've heard is Scanograph) for a variety of things, from flowers to feathers to dead insects, and even once for a dead shrew!

Re: Do you have a scanner?

there is also a hack out there in cyberspace www.digihack.com I think where somebody takes a scanner apart and turns it into a panoramic camera - the image quality leaves a little to be desired though

Very interesting, thanks for the link.

Another link I just found:
http://www.photogalaxy.com/articles/scanner.php

I saw something on TV a while back where a couple of guys were using a flatbed scanner as a camera for architectural photography. They'd basically taken a large-format camera and put a "digital back" on it. It was equivalent to a 122 megapixel camera!

That's great. Some of those images have a real 3D effect. I am going to give it a try, especially with fungus and leaves.

I think this is the guy you mean - http://mirror.geo.localizedmedia.com...ent/index.html

It looks cool , I may have to have a hack about myself if I can find an old MF camera on ebay

Yeah that's exactly what they did but they were a company specialising in architectural work, I've been searching but can't find them unfortunately. Found this though:

Re: Do you have a scanner?

Very interesting. I've just had a try with my scanner with the following result. Not being much of a photographer, I don't think I could have achieved such a good picture with my camera!

I am not planning to take my scanner apart though. This resolution will do me fine.

BTW if a moderator is reading this, could you please delete the image that I submitted to the tree category. I submitted it there by mistake when trying to upoad this forum image.

Thanks,

Jenny

I have now experimented with several things - various leaves, acorns, lichen, heather. They have come out very well indeed. Alan also posted a scanned flower that he wanted ID'ed on the forum the other day. I have not tried flowers yet.

The problem with autumn leaves is that they will probably contain quite a lot of blemishes which you don't really want on the picture. I searched high and low for good quality leaves to scan. The best time would be springtime when they are new although I suspect it is the autumn colours you are after!

Re: Do you have a scanner?

Looking through your site jennyb I came across some good images taken on the scanner, you are too modest, they show just what can be done
I tried some old metal fishing spinners and suprisingly even bulky 3d
items work well

Re: Do you have a scanner?

Like it. Would love to mess around with that. I'll have to make sure the hubby doesn't have a problem with it. My guess is he'll want to try it first and I'll not get the chance.

Just be careful if you try to scan anything that might scratch the glass on the scanner. I had to be very careful when I tried holly leaves!

Re: Do you have a scanner?

I get people sending me scans of beetles from time to time - okay for diagnosis but not very good for the animal ....

Re: Do you have a scanner?

Put acetate over the glass if you're scared of scratching it. The only trouble is it can attract dust.

I'm in mid mangle - I couldnt find a medium format camera cheap enough to butcher so I am trying to use a bellows gear stick cover, a back lens cover an old f1.8 lens and about a pint of araldite - if anything useable transpires I will post it here.

Re: Do you have a scanner?

I did an attractive screen backdrop with a collage of autumn leaves. Scanners are very versatile.
Mine broke down a few weeks ago. My local computer shop said he could supply one for £30 but I didn't get round to it immediately. When I went back they had all gone and no more available. Apparently everyone now buys scanner/printers but I don't want that partly because I have a new printer. So now I have no scanner.

Re: Do you have a scanner?

Last year when I was experimenting with this, there were not many flowers to try out. Here is a bluebell taken with my scanner (sorry I seem to be fixated with bluebells at the moment).

It has come out remarkably well.
