| | Nuthatch disappeared? I've just got to ask as I'm not sure being new but up till tonight I had 14 pics entered - now there are only 13?? One of my nuthatch shots has disappeared - flown?!!!
Also - and forgive me I know how busy moderators are - but I put another 10 up a few days ago (maybe 4 or 5 days not sure?) and none have appeared even tho the menu said they had been successfully uploaded? This happened the first time I put some in - they didn't appear, then I put a few more in and the second lot came up but the very first upload didn't? I uploaded them again and they appeared quite quickly. Is this common - something that happens or am I a jinx??!!
Cheers

| | | Re: Nuthatch disappeared? Hi Pauline,
I sent you a PM yesterday to say that unfortunately we've recently adopted a new policy to only allow simple, thin, 1 or 2 colour, unpatterned borders on images that uploaded to the gallery. This has been brought in because some uploads have gradually started to include larger and more elaborate borders with patterns, floral designs and multi-colours etc.
The images also need to be a minimum of 800x600, not including the size of the border.
For more info, please see this thread for guidelines on uploading images.
Sorry for any inconvenience.

| | | Re: Nuthatch disappeared? Thankyou Stuart - just found this message (was out a long day yesterday) and your private message popped up but now I can't find it! Never mind I've got the gist - no more borders - I can appreciate that a lot of different and very technical coloured borders will distract if everyone did it and on a site uniformity looks best! I will rehash and crop and repost! Thanks

Pauline | Hi Pauline - to access PM's
Either click on 'Private Messages' top left next to your avatar, on the main forum page, or click on 'Quick Links' on the menu bar, and click on 'Private Messages' in the drop-down box.

| | | Re: Nuthatch disappeared? Thanks Alan - I've looked again and two more images have disappeared - the lady's slipper and the fly orchid! Perhaps as the mods work on the site they are deleting thos with borders - in which case guys and gals - all mine have presentation borders - so I think I better start from scratch!!!

| | | Re: Nuthatch disappeared? Its solved! Just so that everyone doesn't start looking for errant nuthatches and orchids - the problem is my big borders! I've had folks sending me private messages of explanation and hadn't found these messages. . . der um. . . having more of those blond moments recently!! Please mods - delete all my previous bordered pics and I will steadily submit them again in plain form. I promise to fit in and behave myself from now on - honest!!

Yes your images with large borders are being removed from the gallery. If you would like to upload them with either no border or as Stuart says 'a simple, thin, 1 or 2 colour, unpatterned border' then any messages that have already been appended to the images can be retrieved. However please remember that the image must be a minimum of 800x600 before the border.
Thanks

| | | Re: Nuthatch disappeared? Thanks for that Jenny - yes I understand too about how the site looks and conforms - but presentation does make a big difference I find and the borders are very easy to do - if anyone would like to know how I do them then just ask - I would be pleased to share!

Pauline | Pauline,
I'd love to know how you do your borders. Also, how you decide what colours to choose. Do you also use borders when printing them?

| | Re: Nuthatch disappeared? The answers yes Jenny - I do print them out with the big borders - most are in a file for showing around friends - some I have put up on the walls. I keep meaning to have some really bigger prints done and poss on textured paper too but haven't got around to that yet.
I do them in Paint Shop Pro and use the dropper tool to 'take' a colour from the pic I'm framing - so that the colour is complimentary to the pic. If you use primary type colours straight from the pallette it will look garish and false! The deciding is the trick!! And sometimes I can do it within mins and other times it takes a lot longer and occassionally with a 'busy' looking pic I have sev goes over sev days. I find I can't do it at all when I'm really tired. You just have to keep playing until something looks 'right'. In PSP click on image, then add borders and a menu will appear giving you multiple size choices. I normally add a thin white border first (and I do take that from the primary pallette on the right to make sure it really is pure white). Then I pick my choice of surround from the photo (click dropper tool over photo and click to fill) then go back to borders and choose a size - say 130 - and click ok and round the photo it goes. Then you can pick a contrast from the photo and add a keyline - lets say a pink from an orchid shot - and click on add borders again - and choose a narrow small band - say 10 - then use dropper to pick up the big border colour again and add another border of maybe 30. Some of mine are still in the galleries so you can see what the effect is. I think this way of doing it works because its tonally correct with the pic and can increase the effect and size of the shot - it worked particularly well with the shag and razorbill pics from the Farnes where I had cropped close to the portrait. The border then increased the size and impact of the photo.
Hope that helps?

| | | Re: Nuthatch disappeared? That's really interesting. I've used PSP for years but never noticed the add borders menu item! Then, it's a question of getting the correct colours which at first would be by trial and error. But, using colours from the image is obviously the key.
Thanks a lot for that,
