Uh oh...its started.

Ha ha...now im in trouble....I have just WON my first "New naturalist" book on ebay. And being the obsessive collector of things that i am it means now im off the starting blocks a lot of money that i dont have will be plowed over the next however many years into finding and collecting the other 100 or so titles in the classic collection....( and knowing me i will have to own more than one copy of each title...one to use and read ( a reprint or second edition etc) and the oh so valuable first edition to stay protected and on the shelf as investment) ( the entire collection can go for £14,000 with first editions)

Oh yeah the copy i just won is a near mint 1976 reprint of number 19 in the collection WILD ORCHIDS by V.S. Summerhayes ( Identical and in the same cover as the 1951 original and NOT one of the rubbish re covered shorter late 80's versions) won for a bargain £6.00 !! ( just need the 1st edition now which can be nearer £100 ) and what a good place to start as im mad about wild orchids and by all accounts the book is still an important piece of literature on the subject .

Thanks god i dont have credit cards anymore

Re: Uh oh...its started.

It's down hill from now on! You'll need a student load just to pay for the books!! The New Natualists series are just about the only ones that I don't have. But that may end as I've got my eye on the latest one about woodlands by Rackham. Not yet published!

Re: Uh oh...its started.

wooh ...hello you two ! im sure your one and the same person...or siamese twins?

Yes nic im a total booky and love "series and collections" and anything where there is a numbering thing going on? how anal is that ! ha ha...At one time i was collecting the uber lush Criterion Collection ( top transfers of classic and cult films on dvd) but it got silly ...so i sold them all and stupidly moved onto the "Folio Society" books...but realised there is like a kazillion of them...old and new so ...well...as im set on a path of conservation now and as there is still only about 100 titles ( plus the monograph series) in the New Naturalist then these are the ones im going to pursue and also they should help me with my degree and stuff maybe.

yes I have it too, fantastic book!

Haven't bothered too much with the NN range though because I don't find them very easy reading - feels too much like studying..... Having said that I am sort of collecting the bird ones in case I need them for research don't care too much about the state they are in though,
this is a good thing because it saves me money!!!

Re: Uh oh...its started.

Any book by Oliver Rackham is worth reading - especially on woodlands. He was the first proponent of historical ecology and I read his books every year or two ...

Re: Uh oh...its started.

Does the "Illustrated History of the Countryside" include all the text?

If not I'd go for the original unillustrated version. Not as pretty, but it's all worth reading.

I think the Illustrated version has been designed to compliment the original book. The original book is certainly a lot more detailed.

Re: Uh oh...its started.

These two books worth getting then? Gonna pre-order the NN Woodlands one soon. Ive also got my eye on of his other ones: Ancient Woodland: Its History, Vegetation & Uses in England. But at £77 its going to have to be my Christmas present I think.

Yes the Rackhams countryside book is a must if you're into historical references especially.

If you hang-on a bit for the NN Woodlands one, you may find it will drop in price a litte after the first couple of weeks of release!

I've seen the Ancient woodlands one, it's a big heavy book that's for sure. A lot of research has gone into it. I'm sure someone whos got it will give you a rieview!

As has been said, any Rackhams book is worth the money!

They always seem to do paperback versions of the new naturalist books and these are a lot cheaper in price.

Yes they do a cheaper paperback version....but be careful about the hardback...its actually cheaper on release for a couple of months £34.99 for the new woodland one released in sept 2006 before going up to about 45 pound at the end of november and then after they stop production or reprint and second editions they rocket in price in the hundreds i have seen an older title going for £900

And i have seen 2000 year titles for over £100

So the trick is to buy on a cheap deal pre release order...

go here for some info http://www.nhbs.com/title.php?tefno=24750

Cheers Dan. Shame about the owls one being cancelled. I did email Collins asking why & if it was ever going to be printed but they never got back to me. That Dragonflies one looks tempting!

Re: Uh oh...its started.

Another book worth mentioning while we're on the tree theme is:

Silva - The Tree in Britain by Archie Miles, ISBN: 0 091 86788 6.

It's more of a general, coffee table book on trees, but it's still got bags of information about the natural history, history and uses of native and introduced trees. It's packed full of marvellous photographs and is in large format . Size 9 x 12 1/2 x 1 1/4 inch thick. Heavy ole book!

I'm smart! I dont' get cup rings on my best books. I bought a book called 'Classic Coffee Table Coasters' this does fine to stick your mug on. I highly recommend it
