What a short break...

I've been away for a few days in Wales with our Grandchildren, thought it would do me a bit of good...The weather was fine, much better than here in the Midlands, not so humid. Everything was OK..until I got home. Waiting for me is a Notification to Prosecute...whilst I was in Wales.
This is my first Speeding offence, but what bugs me most is that so far as I know I kept to all the speed limits that I was aware of. It was apparently one of their mobile vans that clocked me supposedly doing 46 in a 40 mile zone..Now the road I was on at the time has variable speed limits of 30,40 and 50...and no one in the car spotted any roadside Van..
No point moaning too much about it..but if I was guilty of this offence I was completely unaware of it.
To really make me feel good, shortly after finding this nice surprise, I went outside and found I had a puncture in one of my rear tyres which couldn't be repaired...
What a great break!!
I think I'll stay in Nottinghamshire in future!

Re: What a short break...

Not nice Graham. Those mobile speed cameras are popping up everywhere. My other half got his first points by one of those. Thing is he went down the road in the morning 40mph-came back in the evening and the speed had been changed to 30mph for road alterations he was clocked at 38mph. Not exactly hacking along!
Sorry to hear about your flat tyre too. What a pain.
Hope you enjoyed seeing your grandchildren though. Go out and do some photography...that'll make it all blow away.Julie

Sorry to hear that Graham. It was only yesterday, we were talking about sods law. I was wondering when we might get a good example.

Never mind mate I'm glad you enjoyed the short break. At least on WAB your safe and you can type as fast as you want with no worries of getting another ticket Having said that WAB has given you one or two points

Re: What a short break...

In our region - North Yorks - apparently 1,000 motorists were caught by speed cameras in just 4 days, doing in excess of the required 40 mph on a stretch which was coned off. Many folk ignore these temporary restrictions, but it just goes to show that 'they' will catch you if they can.

Here is a photo of one of the so called Talivans.

They are all over the place in Wales. I pretty much have the same view as you. Why choose to holiday there when they are trying to stitch you up as a motorist?

Its bang out of order.

I take it the NIP was sent within 14 days of the offence?

in mk they are giving speed awareness courses rather than penalty tickets to first offenders - its a shame the blue meanies in wales arent as forward thinking

Re: What a short break...

Remember he has only had a notice of intended prosecution at this stage so could still get an offer.

My advice would be to request the following

· Photographic evidence – all evidence they would intend to use in court. If applicable, how far apart the photographs were taken.
· A calibration certificate of the equipment utilised and all serial numbers of said equipment.
· Evidence of the users training and latest attestation on the use of such equipment.
· The index plate of the vehicle used and a history of its ‘markings’. The vehicles have to, by law, be marked sufficiently and are no longer allowed to be stealthy in appearance or obscured in any way.
· The exact location of any camera warning and speed limit reminder signs.
· Communications of proposed mobile camera sites. They have a duty to publicise their activities in newspapers and via radio.
· Details of any sign designs and their respective locations.
· The last recorded site review, in accordance with prominence, visibility and signing - They are no longer allowed to put a van anywhere. It has to be in a location with a 'history'.

Most of these departments expect the good honest citizen to roll over and have their tummy tickled. You should contest this ticket and in may cases they give up.

If you never saw this van they knew exactly what they were doing and therefore it is out of order.

Hope this helps

I remember that Tink

It would have been a lot more if the machine hadn't run out of film Even worse was the fact that the first two days were not recorded.

That's £60,000 in fines! and where's the police when you want one

Re: What a short break...

Its too easy mate for them to put up cameras and fleece the motorist. Like you said where are they when you need them?

to be fair i work quite closely with the police and a lot of them are fine - also a lot of cops arent too fond of the trafic enforcement units either - a dog unit freind of mine refers to them as the "gestapo"

Is the above applicable to the oooeeeooo's that hide in the bushes or on bridges with their hand held units?

Re: What a short break...

General rule is that you are supposed tio be given a fighting chance.

If you are doing 99 on a motorway and you see a unit on a bridge and and brake immediately and in a safe fashion chances are you wont get a ticket as you have demonstrated that you are observant. What they are after is those that just saunter on by without noticing. I have to say, in general they are pretty fair

Re: What a short break...

when i was younger i was a total speed freak and got up to 9 points on more than 1 occasion - however I dont blame the police for this ... as i was driving like a total utter one i clearly deserved what i got - more recently I have been very law abiding and have only picked up 3 points in the last 6 years (licence is currently clean)

so on the whole it is clear that they are not out to get you unreasonably, but it does p me off when you get stopped for things which couldnt matter a hoot such as driving while eating a piece of toast - it took two jam sarnies to get me for toast abuse on the m1 at 2am - surely this isnt a good use of resources.

Re: What a short break...

Yes I hear he is well into his fines for drivers. Every time I come back down from Bangor I see 3-4 of these vans. They are well on top in Wales.

I know there is a lot of TWOC in Wales but GLSAMMY's does seem a bit harsh, especially as no-one saw the van

I've been reading up on the web about this, you seem to have it all nailed! I was going to meekly accept it, but I think a letter along your suggested lines might be in order..Don't worry, I won't hold you responsible if I end up in clink!!

Thanks Julie. I haven't touched my camera since I came back. I haven't even downloaded the pictures from the Holiday. (There will be none going on here, it was supposed to be a do me good break!)

Re: What a short break...

Honestly mate. They expect most drivers to simply pay up. What they dont expect is extra work. This will cause you no more grief as you are entitled to the information. Myself and my mates have had 4 cases dropped in the last year by following this route. They may produce the goods. If so, fair play. But we know what their game is and it is bang out of order

I know alot of people that share this sentiment.

For every driver that gets nicked many others get warned off and then they have to choose - Do I take a holiday in Wales where I risk getting nicked for being a few miles over the limit or do I go Scotland, Ireland or stay in England where they are a little more mature about it.

This money making initiative by Wales Police has alot to answer for.
