What photographic opportunities have you missed, and what was it?

Is there anything that you have seen and wish you'd either been into photography at that time or wish you'd had your camera with you?

It's virtually six years ago to the day and I'd decided to go on a coach excursion from Fuengirola to Sevilla which meant setting off at 4:30am. I spent quite a lot of the time sleeping for I'd had a few Amstels the night before

Anyway, during part of the journey, I woke up, only to see one of the most amazing sights of my life. We'd dropped down from the mountains of the Andalucian range into a huge valley of olive groves, where the early morning mist had settled, and the sun's rays were breaking through it and causing eerie shadows through them... it was unbelievable and an opportunity that to this day, disappoints me immensely.

How about you, what have you missed?

Re: What photographic opportunities have you missed, and what was it?

mine was just last week, i was standing down the bottom of the garden looking at the activity on hemp agrimony when i spotted a red tipped clearwing, dashed indoors for the camera, just about to take the pic when a bee put it up and off it went. some references say they haven't been seen in my neck of the woods for 60 years. ho hum.... maybe next time.

You've got the memory of it though of the experience, the real disappointment would be to have never witnessed it in the first place

I get photo opportunities that are missed all the time, I try not to let it get to me too much, but its not always easy to supress the frustration!

That was a bad one to miss! Nevermind, at least you're upbeat about it!

How true!

There have been other instances but none quite as frustrating as the one I posted. It would have been a spectacular photograph, but as you said, at least I was able to witness it and it will stay long in my memory.

Re: What photographic opportunities have you missed, and what was it?

There was a post on here previously (started by me incidentally) about the same thing. It was after a day when I missed loads due to the battery dying on my camera

The general opinion though was that sometimes its better to not have your camera as you spend more time enjoying the subject as opposed to trying to work out framing and settings.

On saying that it still annoys me that I have not been able to share some of those moments with others, even if the magic won't quite be there.

Re: What photographic opportunities have you missed, and what was it?

Hi
Mine was a few years ago
We were on holiday in the Lake District, decided to go for a walk up some of the peaks around Grassmere
Being sensible we cut down on the gear we were going to carry, so decided to leave camera, and didn’t think there would be much to photograph.
How wrong can you be?
The weather was great, there were reflections on the water which would have given us some nice shots, and water was as smooth as glass.
Learnt a lesson that day leave something else at home never the camera
Mick

Just too numerous to mention .... but I guess you have to accept that with wildlife photography and landscape photography.

At least it gets us all outdoors and hopefully keeps us out of mischief!

UB4 gardener .... believe me, having a DSLR does not guarantee capturing the photo opportunity by any means .

Re: What photographic opportunities have you missed, and what was it?

About 1o years ago I was in the Yorkshire Dales and saw a patch of sunlight across the valley shining through a snow shower. It prompted me to renew my interest in landscape painting, and to buy a good camera because I could not paint a view like that from memory. I have not seen anything like it since.

Badgers. We stayed at a property in Cornwall for a week about 10 years ago and the Badgers used to come for the food we left out for them, they visited everynight without fail, right outside the patio doors. Unfortunately, I wasn't into photography then.

In my hand bag I have-my purse, mobile, hairbrush, tissues, shades, lippy and my trusty little Kodak Easy-Share. I don't go anywhere without it now. Bit hard for you fellas though...unless you carry a handbag that is!

Re: What photographic opportunities have you missed, and what was it?

Although an advocate of always carry a camera ,some of the things that occur are just so magical that I am drawn into the moment and forget the camera in my hand
That is what does it for me those cameo moments, images if possible but letting the story unfold

Re: What photographic opportunities have you missed, and what was it?

Even carrying a camera can be frustrating....
Parkhall, at a pond with hundreds of damsels, and several dragons, getting lots of shots. Then a sparrowhawk slowly glides over the pond, well in view, nice and low.

And I've got a 100mm macro, with no infinity focus.......

Re: What photographic opportunities have you missed, and what was it?

mine was last year at a place called magie pie near tavistock, my family had gone there quite early as it is a popular place & gets quite busy, thinking on that it was proberbly why it happened, me, my son & daughter went into the water looking at these beautiful blue damsels when they started to land on us which was enchanting enough but then i looked at my childern to see they were quite covered in them, their faces at the experiance was awsome & something i will always treasure, just a pity i couldn't capture it for them to see when they got older.
