Top Viewed Images

Having a quick look through the excellent gallery I looked through the top viewed images to me they do not seem to change much(if at all) would anyone care to speculate why it would be that people look only at certain images when there are several similar (some better)images in the gallery.I note that there are new ones added but Adder seems to be the same when in my opinion there are better in the gallery now

Re: Top Viewed Images

Having had a look and realising that all but about 6 images were posted more than twelve months ago. I suppose that it is natural the longer an image is in the gallery the more times it will have been viewed.

Re: Top Viewed Images

I think most people look at the top viewed thinking they will be the best and this in turn keeps them as the top viewed images, Is there not an option of the weeks top viewed images that refreshes at the start of every week?

Re: Top Viewed Images

The Top Viewed Images should have a shake up and be reviewed regularly the originals are good but there are many equally good that deserve a chance

Re: Top Viewed Images

Two of my images of the Auroa Boreails-Northern lights are now in the top viewed images and they have only been on here for a few months not a year. I was very pleased when I discovered this, one of them has had over 200 views the other one is not too far off 200 I don't think.

Re: Top Viewed Images

Do most viewers look for pretty pics or to ID their own?

As a newcomer I have mostly done the latter. I search a category with a keyword and then view what appear to be the clearest pics of the likely ones. I do not look at how many times it has been viewed.

Secondly, if I have pics to post I view a category to see if there are already better ones than mine and if there are I don't post. Again I do not look at how many times they have beeen viewed.

Re: Top Viewed Images

Tonight is the first time I have used the What's Popular tab. I use the What's New tab daily though. I would hate to miss something good.

Re: Top Viewed Images

The point I was making is that with the number of superb images in the gallery the top viewed appears to be stagnent, I just wanted to know why.

Re: Top Viewed Images

Maybe it needs to have the criteria changed for retrieval? How about it picking up the most popular this month? Would constantly keep it fresh - though not specifically the most popular of all time.

Re: Top Viewed Images

I'm sure StuDH will take a look at your suggestions.

In the meantime I concur that probably one of the reasons for most viewed is the length of time they have been on the site (mine of the elephant hawk moth caterpillar being the most viewed and one of the first photos), and it also has something to do with folk accessing the site when looking for identification - it's the only example on the site. Likewise searching for Grass Snake you are presented with a number of pics and may chooose which one to view.

carlj's suggestion sounds good, if it is possible to arrange.

Tink
