| | | bread substitute Right guys, I gave up bread around 4 weeks ago. This was mainly cos I've never enjoyed eating it and I was fed up of feeling horrible every time I ate it. I eat instead around 2 tortilla wraps a day during working week. I feel much much better in myself but am thinking of replacing the wraps with a wheat-free option or a low carb option.
I've just tried using romaine lettuce but very slippery and filling kept falling out Any ideas would be welcomed enormously.
thanx
ps reason I'm asking is that I hate yoghurt, cereal and milk and can't stomach fruit for brekky, therefore stumped

I feel much less bloated and yucky, tho could be psychological.

I haven't tasted them but remembered someone cutting out wheat and eating these.... Might be worth a try?

Just had a look at the website. Seems to be some online ordering but not of food. May try and find a list of uk retail stockists as the crispbread looks ideal.

Is it the gluten in the bread or the yeast that you are trying to avoid? Most big supermarkets sell gluten free products so you shouldn't have any problems getting hold of them.
Why not try a baked potato for lunch if you have access to a microwave or an oven?
It may sound a bit odd but have you tried rice pudding for breakfast? You say you don't like fruit in the morning but a warm fruit compote can be lovely. Put the two together and yum!
Edit: just another thought, have you tried corn meal and chickpea flour products?

Only gave up bread as can't stand eating it anymore ych y fi !! Think the absence of yeast has helped tho. Will keep an eye out for corn meal and chickpea products. Thanx lots

Have you tried pitta? Just split and fill with your usual sandwich filling.
Likewise chapatti (roti), puri or nann. These are yummy with a normal sandwich filling or you could be a bit more exotic and fill then with chickpea or potato curry.
You could make a salad of beans, bulgar or couscous.
How about falafel?
Stewy: That loaf looks gorgeous! I bet it smelt fabulous too.

Yeah I suppose I should be a little more creative lunchtimes with your suggestions etc. I'm just rushing and lazy in the morning and so tired coming home frm work it's enough to get through dinner let alone prepare a nutritious lunch. May try and start using bulgar wheat, lentils etc and make a batch.
Not keen on pitta bread either tho I have eaten it instead of bread as a change. Naan is yummy so maybe a good suggestion there as a treat.

Jim | Aha, someone in work suggested that. Not tried it, apart from the german stuff when I lived in Belgium. Someone else said you could get low carb wraps or corn something wraps. May look at those if they are findable

Hey, I just spotted it - South Wales! How about Laver Bread? My wife gagged on it, and when I laughed she had to look away because my teeth were all black with it!

Jenny | That's down on my shopping list for Fri. The sesame are my faves tho haven't had them for about 2 years.

| | | Re: bread substitute I go for Ryvita now as I find that the yeast in real bread makes me feel bloated. I can manage a slice or two a week, but any more than that is a no-no.
If it is the yeast component that you think may be the problem then there is always the Irish option of soda bread. Most supermarkets sell it, but it is also very easy to make yourself. The one draw back is that after the first day (homemade variety) it can get a little dry, but it is excellent for toast if that would help your breakfast problem. |

| | | Re: bread substitute Cous Cous and Bulgar Wheat are an excellent base for a variety of toppings, and make great dishes such as Tabbouleh. They also have the advantage of taking minutes to cook, and can be done in advance tasting just as good cold.
Oatcakes - really getting into these since my little girl has developed a taste, and even strangely, the bland but enjoyable rice cakes that go with them.
I have made some indian pancake type things called Dosas, made from a mix of rice and red lentils, allowed to ferment for a day or so, then blended and fried, delicious!
Polenta is great, can be made into chunks of 'cake' that can be used cold as and when, and are good for snacks as well as a base for a meal topped with a tomato-y veg sauce.
Gram flour, Buckwheat, Spelt (like wheat but doesn't seem to be an issue for some wheat affected people I know), Millet, Quinoa, Amaranth - all these are other grains and flours I use on a more or less regular basis. Check them out, and see what appeals. If you want some ideas for what to do with them, pm me, rather than clog up the list with recipes.
So many things to do instead of bread, but such a shame that you don't like it. I started making my own a few years back and will not buy shop made bread now as the contrast is too stark (my bread = great, even when a poor batch, shop bread = pants). Have a go at making your own, you never know it might work for you.
Cheers
Sven
