Well, they are either a previous owner's pet, or his/her partner!!

Looking forward to the photogs so we can guess which!

Yes, most likely a previous pet.

Re: Can anyone ID bones found in my garden?

If they're "very old" then I doubt if they will be guinea pig, rat, mouse, gerbil, iguana, parrot, budgie, snake, goldfish, et al!! They'd have disintegrated by now. I still come across Rabbit bones from a few years back in my herb garden (it's been a long while since any Rabbits were buried in there) so I'd say Rabbit sized upwards

Come on then, Phoebe! We're all waiting for you!

D.

How far down were the bones? I suppose it wouldn't have to be a pet if the house and garden were built more recently

Hi all

I am uploading the photos now. For info my house was built in 1690 yes it's 17th century, the bones are certainly not a small pet! I was having Oil Central Heating fitted and when they dug down to 600mm I was telling them how I always find bones and broken bits of old pottery, lo and behold we was looking at a selectionof bones in the trench.

Photos to follow.

I believe its a sheep. The bottom one is the shoulder blade. The one above looks like its from its arm/fore leg.

Re: Can anyone ID bones found in my garden?

Hi,

I'm absolutely no expert on this, but the jawbone: Being pointed yet broad and blunt, I'd guess it's a herbivore... it kind of looks like it would be used on foliage, like a grazer.

Re: Can anyone ID bones found in my garden?

I wondered if they could be from a horse or maybe a pig. The bones are very crumbly so I don't know how long it would take to get to that stage. It is a puzzle.

The jawbone is not complete it is broken off on the length so would be longer.

There are more photos of the same from other aspects in the archive I didn't want to put them all on here for fear of boring everyone.

I have to agree, it looks so herbivore and I would say sheep.

Photo of the grinding surface of the teeth?

Re: Can anyone ID bones found in my garden?

Most of you seem to agree on sheep. Thanks for your replies. I must buy a shoulder of lamb for Sunday Roast so I can compare. I really wanted to keep looking in the trench, there must be the whole animal in there. But where I found other bones in the past were no where near this spot in fact they were 10 metres away it quite surprised me. I must be living on a kind of animal cemetary

Re: Can anyone ID bones found in my garden?

I doubt it. I do live with farmland around so assume it had been buried many years ago. And as for the other bones found I really don't know.
