All that excitement by the presenters at the chance of a cub or two being killed, especially those of the cheetah and leopard. Ugh! it makes my blood boil, my nerve endings twang, gives me stomach wrenching butterflies .... but doesn't stop me reaching for the remote the following night. I tell ya, I'm fair worn out. |

| | | Re: big cat live? I cannot bear to watch. Of course we all know nature is red in tooth and claw, but the format of these programmes possibly draws us in too much, getting us emotionally involved with it's subjects.
I know what happens, I just don't need to know the unfortunates personally.
JMHO.

The programme I was thinking of is called Big Cat Diary, I think....and that's on in the evening on a main terrestrial channel (BBC?) Simon King presents, among others and they give the wild animals names.
The Jackal webcam sounds good, Dogghound.

What is being discussed is the current Big Cat LIVE (not Big cat diaries).
Its LIVE (as in not pre recorded) and as i cant stand 'big cat diaries' and have heard nothing but bad reviews of this current 'big cat LIVE' i have avoided it.
I get wriled by giving wild animals 'names' (I dont even like the stag names on springwatch)
And apparently this big cat live thing has had some daft non wildlife savvy news reader or presenter in tears every 5 minutes if something dies?...get over it love...its not Blue Peter!

That just goes to show, I do not watch tv much.
On that basis I think I'll stick to Strictly Come Dancing thanks - which seems to be the only reason for me owning a tv at the moment. With apols to tameblackbirds; it has great programme excitement, tension, passion, fear, bravery and sadness....and no airhead presenter. Oh hang on, yes it has.
Thanks for the webcam link, DH, much appreciated.

| | | Re: big cat live? I loved Big Cat Diaries, it was the best soap on TV....
if im honest i don't enjoy the new format so much...
Because it's live it seems they're trying too hard to fill the time,
Awkward pauses etc..Previous series flowed much more naturally and
were far more enjoyable and gripping.
Don't get me wrong i am enjoying it, just prefer the old format,

| | | Re: big cat live? Actually I do agree with with you Dutchess There is all the tension as I said but I am not happy with the anthroporphism of the animals. I do admire Simon king but am afraid that sometimes he over exaggerates what is actually happening. I wonder if this is to make the programme entertaining to people who may not hold a great interest in wildlife?

Look at the the master, David Attenborough. He doesn't pull any punches yet conveys what is happening more than adequately. It will be a sad day when his sort of presenting is kicked over in favour of the soap opera approach

| | | Re: big cat live? I know what you mean, Dan, about giving the animals names. It irritates me too. However, there are so many animals that they are following, I don't really know how they could identify them without giving them names.
The highlight for me was when the cheetah was given a dose of her own medicine. The cheetah wanted to have a little baby topi for tea. Of course, the topi Mum was a bit upset by this and actually chased the cheetah. I could not believe it when the cheetah ran away with the adult topi hot on her heels. To get away, the cheetah leapt on top of the open topped vehicle driven by Jonathan Scott. The topi of course could not follow.
Jonathan Scott was sat in the vehicle with the cheetah's tail hanging down inside. I have to say that at this stage, if it was me, I would have had a heart attack.
On top of this, we saw tonight, the cheetah did not just sit on top of the vehicle but proceeded to have a cr*p on poor old Jonathan inside the car Great footage!
I went on safari last year and I did not want to come back. I would give anything to be involved in a project like Big Cat Live.

| | | Re: big cat live? Yeh very true.... come dancing as its role to play here, we know exactly what we are going to get and expect nothing more.
Nature programmes should not be following a format that makes it easy watching nature by its nature is a life and death battle of survival.
I have watched big cats again tonight and the programme was more informative. The programme does have lots of emotions in it and watching the Wildcats catching prey tonight was exciting and terrifying at the same time. this was all got over without the animals being given a personality.
How do you feel about spring watch, autumn watch as this will be on again soon? I do enjoy this programme but still feel that this too can sometimes over exaggerated the action.

I watched this too Jenny and was stunned! I have to say sort of pleased too ......
But thats me..... I thoroughly enjoy most of it but struggle to watch the reality sometimes... (they need to eat!)
I envy your safari though, must have been something special, a friend just returned and some of her photos are amazing

| | | Re: big cat live? Have to say I enjoy the programme + it is imformative- some behaviours recorded not previously seen.
Though I can understand some people being irked about giving them names; surely that is the only way we can remember them as individuals ( for that is what they are); it's not going to be easy for scientists/ programme makers/viewers to remember 2A, 531 or whatever.
It is common practice amongst scientists to give names to individuals they are studying- such as the late great Sir Peter Scott naming all the Bewick Swans that arrived at Slimbridge or cetacean workers. To give a name isn't being Disney-like, anthropomorphosing them. It helps us understand their behaviour.
I did prefer the original BCD format, though the night stuff this time was interesting to see. Having the local Masai guy- Jackson I think, was a bonus too.
Having been to the Masai Mara the programme always brings back fabulous memories. |

Naturegirl : | I don't think anyone particularly enjoys seeing an animal being killed, but life + death is an integral part of nature.
What is sick about understanding + studying (even via TV) the reality of nature? Perhaps stick to the fancy world of Disney where your sensibilities won't be offended! |

| | | Re: big cat live? Well shoot me down in flames if you want - but I enjoyed the fact that it was live with all the usual things that go with live tv - like being too close to the fire and the wind blowing the sparks in their faces - I'm not being nasty - I just found it amusing and was waiting for Jacksons colourful wrap to catch fire While the next clip was being shown there must have been some frantic readjustments going on as they were further away from the flames when the camera came back to them..........
The actual filming of the animals - both night and daytime was electric and the increase in knowledge informative - filming lions sleeping and lounging in the heat of the day is ok but it doesn't tell us much about their behaviour or character!
Years ago I couldn't have watched this programme and couldn't have stomached the killing - but to be interested in nature and how it all works I have to acknowledge that nothing about the natural world is cosy - its all competative - all the time. These days I cheer for the predators - if that cheetah mother gets hurt then its over for the youngsters - they will begin to starve, get noisy and noticeable and get taken by hyenas. Ok so it showed a lot of hunting and killing but predators do not get a meal everytime they want or need one - the presenters themselves said that the lions hadn't made a kill for three nights and the cubs were hungry and mithering for food ...........
I say well done for making an all round programme as uncomfortable as the subject might be thats life in the mara.........

I'm particularly enjoying the 'non-big cat' stuff, such as Jackson's tracking tips, and some of the smaller, less well-known inhabitants of the Mara. I'm off on Safari in a few days time and I can't wait - this series has just increased my eagerness to be there!! |
