| | | Crab apple-ing I was just out in the garden when I noticed a little crab apple with a small bite out of it. I was transformed to my early teens when a group ' gang ' used to spend wild exciting evenings daring each other to nick crab apples . I am not sure if we had a better name for it , my wooly brain says there was .
Does any one else have such memories and if so did you have another name for this !!

| | | Re: Crab apple-ing 'Scrumping'...we were naughty! Actually all we nicked were the odd apple or pear. To be honest I can remember feeling guilt ridden after and scared stiff in case my parents ever found out that my brother and our friends had 'scrumped' the odd fruit!

| Pam I am sitting here chuckling ... I did alot of scrumping, thats what we called it too, a right tom boy! I was found out once when I came home bruised, cut, scraped, my new jacket and jeans torn after falling out of the tree from quite a hight We went into the same orchard to pick conkers too, it was all the more exciting because of the KEEP OUT signs....
Thanks for posting annmaria, reminising now...........

It was not about the apples , I dont recall eating the darn things. We had our own apple tree (baker which is still going strong having its best year ever)
One sunny day helping my Mum carry shopping home a young lad was sat straddling the garden wall , inching his way to our tree when Mum asked what he was doing up there he replied ,
" Its Ok the lady said I could climb up "
Poor lad I think it was this chap that was made to eat most of a large baker
I would love to go back to those days , I wonder if kids still go srumping.

| | | Re: Crab apple-ing My brother and I used to go scrumping as young 'uns!
The tummy ache we used to suffer after scrumping under ripe pears was noboddy's business!!!
The last time I was caught scrumping (sadly!) was when I was in my 20's, somewhat innebriated! and couldn't resist some rather lovely, ripe Victoria plums one night!!
Luckily the farmer didn't recognise me, but I got a fair few bruises and thorns that night by going straight through a Bramble hedge!!
I'm a BAD girl!!

| | | Re: Crab apple-ing It must be a Kentish thing naturegirl....seeing as we are in 'fruit' country...i cannot really remember doing anything OTHER than scrumping for my entire childhood into late teens..and beyond.
It was a yearly custom with me, my bro...our gang...even mum...
Cobnuts...apples...pears.....plums...golden guages, cherries...basically anything that grew in the local orchards. I have just made about a gallon of damson jam an hour or so ago....from the village green trees...but technically thats not scrumping...

| | | Re: Crab apple-ing I made some damson jam the other week Dan but had to buy them, cost £5 something for about 1.7lb of fruit!!!
Where we used to live when I was a nipper we had a damson tree and we could fill our boots but I found that price quite shocking. |

A gallon of Damson jam!!! What are you thinking dear boy????????
How about a gallon of Damson wine!!! Yummy!!!
We too, scrumped daily in our youth years, I agree that it may be a 'Kentish thing'!!
I remember picking Blackberries and adding pond water, Bramley apple bits, then boiling the whole thing up in a Cocao tin over a bonfire, then eating/drinking the contents as though it was Nectar!!!!!!!!!
We were young then though.........

I still carry the scars from being stampeded by Friesian cows into scurrying up a tree upon which I left my knee!!!!!
Whilst seeking Cobnuts!!!!

We nearly always ended up not 'guilt ridden' but 'pain ridden'. usually 'cause the apples were not ripe.
