| | | Re: Footpath Warning Signs? My ex and I were on top of a mountain in the middle of nowhere when we encountered a herd of cows with the odd calf. Mummy cow decided to verbally warn us to go away immediately which we thought was quite cute...until daddy heard her
The enormous bull came pounding down the hillside and I dived over a gate and hid behind the dry stone wall; my ex was pooh pooing my actions and muttering words like 'lightweight'. The bull then snorted and started pawing the ground very aggresively, it was only when he actually started urinating menacingly, (bull not ex ) that ex flew over the gate and hid with me. The bull stayed for ages, a bit like the ringwraiths looking for Frodo et al in Lord of the Rings Very very scarey experience and I've been weary of large things with 4 legs since.
Then again I got bitten by an emu too and they only have 2 legs

Horses aren't too bad, I've worked with them all my life and it depends on what type of horse you have (for instance a thoroughbred mare is not one for beginners!!(I have a story about that)). Marcus, the one I ride, is a big softie and a little dopey sometimes. But if he wants to go somewhere, he will!! He went lame this week though. He was in agony with laminitis. Better now though.
Yeah, and the sign is jut to warn you that there is a tempremental bull in the field, just so the farmer doesn't get in trouble with the law for not warning footpath users. Sarah | Don't you believe it...Some horses are mental, My horse used to share a field with a nut case (chestnut mare ), It would attack anyone who went into the field. I had hell of a job getting my horse out when that was in the field. |

| | | Re: Footpath Warning Signs? I'm a bit of a scaredy cat when It comes to Horses, I give them an extra wide birth. Only a couple of weeks ago I was standing at my local bus stop on a Beautiful Saturday afternoon listening to some of my favourite tunes through earPhones and noticing the Red Arrow's moving through the clear skies over yonder when all of a sudden a Horse with Rider turned up along side me, Scared the Life out of me and I scared the Horse. It looked so frightened, the rider nearly came off. Don't know what spooked It, I don't really agree with Horses being on our Main roads, would of been a different matter If there was lot's of traffic about. |

| | | Re: Footpath Warning Signs? In this case if I'd known what was at the far gate I'd have done the detour - I'd say 'get a pair of binoculars' - they may be hard to run with but they can save you a lot of running. If you're in a field with a bull you are not in control of the situation.
I can't agree enough with the person who said "never trust a bull". Even ones reared from calves in your own yard. Horned or polled. They can all move faster than you can ever hope to. If you ever see them in action you'll understand why the Spanish esteem bullfighting an art form. I've seen a Charolais cross bull sail over a standard five-bar gate with feet to spare - and they're humungous animals... Bulls also have a tendency to jump fences and walls and can be a source of great controversy between adjacent beef and dairy farmers when calving time comes around... !!
The other side of the coin of course is that you can put up a "Beware of the Bull" sign outside a field with no bull in it to discourage visitors... another good reason to carry binoculars... |
