The Green Man at Putney Heath....I used to know it well Frequented during the hot summers of '75 and '76 especially, lol. But oh! What an horrendous pub sign!

at the risk of hijacking this thread I found myself being followed through one of the woods in the dark on a wet & windy night when all god-fearing people should be in the comfort of their own homes. Eventually I challenged the person (by then hiding behind a tree) who unsurprisingly couldn't give any reasonable account of himself or his behaviour. Like all the Royal Parks, RP supports a small fluctuating population of rough sleepers (from the temporarily homeless to the latest wave of unofficial immigrants and the mentally ill) who cause terrible problems when the culls come around, not to mention lighting fires, and being blissfully unaware of the dangers of the Red Deer rut so I called up the parks police who recognised Mr Woodwose's description/behaviour and we went back and spoke to him and he was then formally asked to leave the park - but in a place like RP that's a formality that is hard to enforce. I gathered it certainly wasn't the first time for him and I doubt it will be the last! From my perspective it's more important to know who these people are - and for them to know me - in order to avoid exactly this sort of pointless high-risk encounter.
But these things have been happening in wildish places since time immemorial. Which hopefully will get back to the rural tradition theme...
As a p.s. I should perhaps reiterate that "derelict" comes from "deer-licked" though I don't doubt I could easily pass for the conventional understanding!
I take it Hedge-witch is nothing to do with Sand-witch? |

Tee hee hee - Hedge Witch comes from 'one who sits on the hedge' - one who is on the boundary between the known and unknown worlds. Please don't read too much into it Thanks for the cautionary tale - interesting! What the heck was he doing following you - freaky. I bet it was a territorial thing - you were on his territory! Anyway, I suppose I mustn't hijack this thread any longer - thanks again for the reply - very interesting.
Back to the rural theme...

A warm November is a sign of a bad winter (we should be OK then ).
