Home remedies....

Hi, Ive been suffering all day with a sore throat as i dont have any medicine around, and find they dont really work anyway. And it got me wondering if anyone knew of a remedy?

Can go off on a tangent of any home remedy that you find is useful for any ailment if you want

A hot toddy is my remedy for all such problems,,,,,

Double whiskey.( pref malt)
Two teaspoons of Honey
Juice of half a lemon
Two tablespoons of boiling water,,,
Stir well and drink,,,,

Also you can gargle with a weak solution of TCP and warm water.

This is far more effective than the hot toddy however its the hot toddy for me everytime....I sometimes have the hot toddy but without the Honey lemon and Hot water..

Re: Home remedies....

I use Manuka honey - Medibee UMF 10+.

It may be expensive, but it works for me. (Reduces Helicobacter pylori in the stomach too - added bonus!)

I take a teaspoon and swallow as slowly as I can - usually just before bed (after brushing my teeth). I'd probably have another in the morning.

But I do have a strong immune system - so the effective dosage for myself may be lower than for some people. (For example, I haven't had a cold now for several years. I have a cure for that too, but I won't ramble on.)

Re: Home remedies....

A good hot curry! seems to work for me - something that gets your nose running.
Garlic is a good antibacterial as well so lots of garlic bread! (just not with the curry)

Re: Home remedies....

I read in a natural remedies book that i have that salt was good for clearing the sinuses. It said to rub some up your nose as it absobs the moisture. I told my mother in law this who was suffering from sinusitus at the time and she had a face steamer machine type thing so she put some in the bottom with the water and inhaled the steam. She said it cured the sinusitus when drugs from the doctor hadn't. Never tried it myself, but may help some of you if you ever need to try it.

Well yes, lots of garlic in the curry, but you wouldn't want curry and garlic bread - that just wouldn't be right (you'd need a garlic nan instead)

Re: Home remedies....

I have always loved this one........

Chop a peeled onion in half (or use a whole one if you want), put brown sugar on and cover bowl with cling film and leave. Then take a spoonful or two of the juice that comes out.

MMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Home remedies....

to clear the sinuses and help with post nasal drip etc I was told to crush some garlic and black peppercorns, put in the centre of a hankey or bit of kitchen roll, put corners together, twist it round to make a smallish ball and breathe in through the nose , it certainly makes me sneeze if nothing else

I used to have a box of boiled sweets that were garlic flavoured (made with real garlic). If I took one when I thought I had a cold coming, it would work it's magic and the cold would never appear. When I'd run out, I developed the knack of chewing on peeled garlic cloves - neat. They burn a bit, but seem to work (but I think Vick's first defense works too - and may be more socially acceptable).

The other way is to peel and chop the clove in 2 or 3 and swallow with water, like taking a tablet.
Apparently it also helps deter biting flies (takes a while to build it up in your system)

My doctor actually recommended a version of this, she told me you can pay ludicrous amounts of money for a dead sea salt nasal spray or just use a syringe full of salty water and wash out your nose, with head tipped forward or it will run down your throat. It works a treat for allergic rhinitis.
