| | Great News The school have asked me to do a wildlife after school club (paid) once a week (to start with) from september I have arrived at last
I am also doing some more Wildlife activity days during the summer holidays.
I have also arranged with the local youth club leader to have him and about 10 teenagers ( 15 to 19 yr olds) one evening a week (5 to 8 pm) for 6 weeks (min)come and help me clear the over grown brambles and make pathways through the woods to enable the children to use the whole of the woods. they are also going to clear the area for my classroom. Then to do regular stints maintaing these areas.
They also asked if it would they could camp out there for a night with me and a teacher ( if one will agree) and do a survey on what nightlife there is in our woods and school grounds.
It also looks like we are also going to become a release sight for Hedgehogs as well as we have proved that there are already Hedgehogs living in the gardens beside the school

Two thoughts - if you can get a local bat worker involved with the night time stuff I reckon that would be brilliant - if its amazing as an adult to be shown the whole other world that is bats echolocating it must be way better for kids - plus its one of those groups that kids can get influenced by the media and indeed paarents into thik are horrible.....
2nd thought. Its great that Hedgehogs are living there already it shows that the habitats are good for them but make sure that more each addition that you increase the value if the habitat so you don't end up with over crowing - log piles to provide homes etc. Oh and don't clear too much bramble I bet they hedgies love the berries come late summer! |

As for bramble no we wont be removing them all.. but the whole woods are over run with them as the woods have been untouched or managed for last 10/12 years 90% of ground cover is brambles...lots will be cleared... but one area of the woods back to managable amounts.. but one area of the woods is going to be left completely untouched..

I don't know about moths and woods but maybe you could do some sort of trap. There are lots on here who would advise you on that. |

| | | Re: Great News That is good news. I used to help run an after-school nature club at a primary school, and really enjoyed it. I think kids in that age group often have an interest in wildlife - I seem to remember pond dipping always went down a treat!
I think it's fantastic that you've managed to get teenagers on board too, as I know they can be a much harder age group to enthuse. Their camping idea sounds like great fun! |
