Blessed by Sacred Water

For those of you who don't know Wells High St. it has troughs running down either side of the road, carrying water from the springs/wells to the good people of Wells. This gift of free fresh water was granted by Bishop Thomas Beckynton, in the 1450s.

The springs have been a Sacred Site for at least 4000yrs.

Well, just a few minutes ago I was walking down the High St. & witnessed a lady, who turned out to be a Yank tourist, trip & fall into the trough.I felt for her but could see the humour Her husband helped her up, she was soaked all down one side. As they passed me I said, with a smile "Well m'deer, you've been blessed with Sacred Water." She laughed & asked about it, so I told how it was. Her husband invited me to have coffee tomorrow, in the B.P.

Just thought I'd share this with you.

Re: Blessed by Sacred Water

Clear spring water must always have been regarded as a great boon Especially in land on the chalk or limestone where there are fewer streams &c.
There's an interesting couple of wells in Eyam which sits astride the limestone and the acid sandstone: although directly next to each other, one gives very hard water, one very soft ....

Sorry Jez, it's my fault, I'd been on deviantart, there they've got to know my short-hand. B.P. is the Bishop's Palace, and it's in the grounds of the Palace that the springs rise. Visit my dA site & you'll see plenty of images of the Palace & Gardens.

Re: Blessed by Sacred Water

I wish WAB would allow me to put some photos of the Palace Gardens & well pool. The clarity of the water is unbelievable, the reflections I get are something else. There are 3 reflection pics in the gallery so far, others have not been accepted.

btw, where's Eyam, can't find my UK atlas?

Yes, bittens nested on the Levels this year for the first time in a very long time, if they ever did. Many Nature Reserves around the Levels, plus the Mendip Hills. Flat or hilly, take your pick

Agreed ... but would you want to drink the water straight out of the ground? I think not - like our bogs up north: great for animals (except the ones that drown and rot in them) but I like the water seriously purified before imbibing!

It's well worth a visit for anyone in the area - not just for the geology or the Miner's Arms but for its history ....

Here are some reflection shots, taken on the Moat. I love reflections, as you'll find out. It's great, working with Mother Nature's Palette, shame there's not a gallery to Art in Nature.
