I live in Wells, & have been photographing Mendip, Avalon & their brood of 8 since they hatched on June 1st. Paul, the Gatehouse Keeper, lets me in first thing in the morning if I want to go in at say 6am or late in the evening. It seems the images are not good enough for the gallery, but I'll be posting a thread here, in the Treehouse, from the day after they hatched to they day they finally fledge. Then they will be taken down onto the Levels & released among the wild swans. Quote:

Excellent! I really look forward to seeing those. Most people think I'm joking when I say about the bell ringing swans - good to see someone else knows them!
Have the same pair of swans been there for a number of years then? I like seeing the swans down on the Levels - especially when there are lots of them together |

No Zail, the pair here now is made up of the old pen & an amputee cob. He & another amputee pen where brought here last year, being amputees they can't fly away, it seemed everything was going well until the old pen flew in. She hadn't been seen for nearly a year. Anyhow, hte cob looked at her & then his mate, thought 'two wings better than one' & went off with the old girl. 
They mated, the pen laid 8 eggs, & 8 cygnets were born on June 1st. Been following them every day since

She's all alone on the well pool, cob tried to drown her 'till I wacked him one with my staff & later the pair were moved onto the Moat. The lone pen looks sad & lonely, her head is slightly downcast. We sit & talk most days.
There's talk of either getting her a mate or taking her to Abbotsbury Swannery. We'll see what happens over the next few months.
