An otter wash out

report on my visit to the chestnut centre, chapel en le thrith, derbs - It rained, a lot . typical, sunny every working day, pees down on my first day off for ages- grrrr

Anyway the centre itself - I wasnt that impressed to be honest, I really like the Otter and owl trusts centre in the new forest so I was expecting great things and frankly I didnt get them.

Photographic access was lousy - Except for my gargantuan height (6ft 4) I would have been stuffed as a lot of the barriers are 5ft plus, and the mesh is too shiny to shoot through, as it was I wound up climbing onto benches and on one enclosure on to the top of the safety fence (my bad) to get decent pics - Took over 100 and got 18 half decent ones, the best of which are attached here - nowt award winning though. ho hum

More importantly though the animals didnt look that happy and I got the distinct impression that the enclosures were too small (average 5m by 10m) and too many Otters had been put in together, for example in one 5m x 5m enclosure they had 3 asian short claw Otters, while in another 10x5 there were two europeans. The over crowding had manifested itself in a lack of vegetation worn away by trampling and the animals runing round and round on a sort of fixed circuit rather than behaving naturally - not good at all imo.

Overall I would say that if you live in the peak area and just want to see an Otter without photographing it then you might as well go along as the entrance fee of six quid aint going to break the bank - however if you are going to travel you'd be better off going to the BWC at lingfield or the Otter trust at bungay or plymouth, or the Otter and owl sanctuary in the new forest.

Re: An otter wash out

They all look a bit angry. Is that normal?

Re: An otter wash out

yeah, Otters arent the freindliest thing you'll ever meet, people who think they are cuddly are sadly mistaken. They also have a bite pressure of about 900ppsi - which is roughly one and a half times that of a pit bull - and only slightly less than a timber wolf.

Mind you its partly the way the face is put together rather than a real attitude

tho if I was being kept in those enclosures I'd be more than angry I'd be flippin

When I've had time to resize them I'll put a couple up from BWC so you can see a happy Otter.

Was you shooting through glass eeyore? It's harder than you think with captive animals sometimes isn't it. Mess enclosures can especially be a pain! Good record pics anyhow

Re: An otter wash out

If you goto the BWC on an arranged photographic session you will have access to the Otter enclosures as well as access to most of the other enclosures. I was there last November, all on my own Snowing hard, lying on a waterproof sheet getting images of the Otters. When they get use to you and start walking all over you the cold and the snow is forgotten and it certainly made me feel at peace. Bad description, but you get the idea

Re: An otter wash out

I know Kev, I've been to BWC four times now - originally with wild arena (www.wildarena.com if anyone is interested) then three times on my own, the into enclosure access is well worth the extra cash.

No they don't have glass panels and the wire is too shiny and small meshed to shoot through, for most of these I was standing (illicitly) precariously balanced on the 6" wide safety overhang shooting hand held with the little bigma at 500mm which is why they aint very sharp - I'm going to have to go back to BWC soon to remind myself that I can do the biz under more favourable conditions
