What 6Mp+ compact camera should I buy?

M better half suprised me this evening by asking me to get her a camera. She is after a small "point & shoot" digital. That description is a salesmans dream customer walking through the door lol So to add to that description x3 or better optical zoom and probably from Sony, Canon or Nikon. It will only be used for point & shoot at family gatherings and the like so a huge amount of technical gadgetry isnt needed. Cost isn't a real problem as long as it's less than £500

Any of you bought a compact recently and thought "damn this is good" or have trawled through the options available? I tend to read up on DSLRs rather than look at the compacts so any help greatly appreciated.

Re: What 6Mp+ compact camera should I buy?

The one I was using at the wedding recently had a great big screen on the back of it. Nearly took up all of the back of the camera. I could not believe how good the photos came out. You can set the camera per condition and it changes all of the settings to accomodate the perfect shot. My friend sent me the pics last week and they were fantastic and he is by no means someone that would have utilised photoshop or whatever. I was really impressed

Fuji F11 every time - miles better than the ixus range - much bigger LCD, simple intuitive set up and high endurance batteries that can do 1600+shots on one charge. I bought the predeccessor the F10 as a walking arround camera and am most happy with it. This is the compact that a lot of pro's carry as a last ditch back up - and the best thing is they are only about £250

lots of pics on http://thequacksoflife.blogspot.com/ check through the archives

its not as compact as the ixus range but very nice to hold and easy to use.

I got some pretty good pics with my Nikon Coolpix 4800, I love that camera - it's relatively old now and I think they do a smaller sized bigger pixelled version now.

I have an Ixus and it's a good bit of kit. The macro facility is very good too.
