| | | springwatch is it just me or is any one irritated by bill Oddy .i turned off last night as i could not stand him any longer .he seems to trivialise and dumb down the whole program, which i regret as i think some of it is really good
hope this is the right place for this opinion |

| | | Re: springwatch Please, do we have to have this debate on this site? The Springwatch site has been bogged down with it since the programme started & it always ends up degenerating until the moderators intervene - hence the current 3 minute interval between postings rule.
People can choose to watch or not, all I would say is that it must be hard for anyone to put out a live show, not knowing from one minute to the next what will be happening. At least all the team do it with enthusiasm.

as far as the does bill iritate thing goes - he irritates the **** out of me, but then so do most wildlife presenters - even david attenborough. To be fair he (Bill Oddie) isnt like that in person, I met him when i worked at weeting heath in 99, I think a lot of the dumbing down is inflicted on him by the producers/script writers who are trying to make the show accesible to people who know nowt about wildlife.

I have met Bill on a few occasions and he is a great ambassador, not only for Birdwatching but wildlife in general.
If dumbing down has to be the norm to get through to the masses then so be it. I'm all for it. If he was to get all tecnical and try and make the subject matter understanding to those of us that are committed to wildlife already how do you think the ordinary Jo, that has little or no knowledge of wildlife, would react to the programme. I think they would switch off fairly quickly.
I for one thoroughly enjoy the programme because it aims at an easy level.
You have to remember that Bill has many personal problems and to put himself in front of a live camera 4 nights a week must be hard for him. He is a manic depresive at times and his mood swings are well known.
Lets give credit to the man for bringing all forms of wildlife to the masses over the years. Between him and David Attenborough I can't think of anyone else that has had such impact on the ordinary person where Wildlife in general is concerned.

I love the blonde, and certainly have time for bill oddie given his start in life
The one I cannot stand is the poor b in shetland nothing personal but he lacks delivery
The whole series brings breakfast queries at work and anything that can spark interest is good in my book

Kate is a bit of a babe, even if she does get a little too excited for my taste at times.
Bill manages to mix a little fun with his passion (even though I don't actually find him very funny) - He makes the whole subject of wildlife & bird watching less geeky and as mentioned above, more accesable to all! |

That vacuous londe chatterbox would be welcome round my yard anytime. I think Kate is lovely. Possibly my favourite girl on TV |

I can understand why some people wouldn't like the two of them for their informal delivery etc but I think they do just about pull it off.

As an ornithologist, conservationist and natural history presenter. he has been an obsessive birdwatcher since childhood and has written for many specialist publications: British Birds, Birdwatching Magazine, Twitching etc. |

| | | Re: springwatch I can't believe that anyone thinks that Simon King lacks delivery. Did you never watch the series about the Cheetahs, or any of the other series that he has been in. He has been inspirational.
Regarding Shetland. He is in an environment where he can't really get too emotional as he is totally open to what is around him. No trees to hide him just totally open countryside so his movements have to be laboured and to a degree so has his speech. He was much better last year on Bass Rock because he was allowed to express himself in the way he wanted.
He actually did a talk at the Birdforum marquee last year and I got the chance to talk to him. He is an amazing man with such passion for wildlife and it rubs off on anyone that comes into contact with him.

Perhaps it's because the format is very similar as the previous years. I also find that some of the short films are not as exciting as previous years (remember the foxes last year in the garden).
Simon is a bit stilted this year but you may find that next week when he is in a different habitat he might bounce back with his usual style, and yes I agree with his repetitiveness. Mind you he hasn't had a large amount to talk about. Otter, Oystercatcher, Merlin and Red Throated Diver in the main. That is not a very big supporting cast for him to talk about and there is only so much you can say about the same thing.

I didn't meet the Man himself, but I got twenty quid for the gig, at a time when i needed the money, so I'm not as anti as I might seem. |

| | | Re: springwatch Did anyone catch the small film by John acheson (think that’s how you spell it!) on Springwatch last night?
It was entitled ‘Looking for Beauty’
Only 5 minutes long, but what a little gem of a film! It was the best sequence of the series up to now for me. It was about anticipation of beauty when he’s trying to capture it on film.
As John said: ‘Natures beauty in not just in what I see, it’s in what looking for it does to me’
He then ended by quoting William Blake:
‘To see a world in a grain of sand, and a heaven in a wild flower, hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and eternity in an hour’
Absolutely lovely stuff.
More of this I say! |
