| | | Re: dead computer Mine's pretty quick but then I've got firewire. Saying that the one on my work machine is usb 2 and its not that bad (its the tescos special)
I wouldnt use one as my primary boot and programs disc but they are excellent for catalouging the pho library and for backing up the C: drive for when the primary disk goes south.
I have three 250Gb and one 500Mb lacie fire wire drives for my photo library (which is also stored on CD at a different location for last resort back up) 3 hold the library 1 each for birds, mammals, landscapes) with the fourth backing them up. I also have a freecom 250Gb backing up my C: drive and a 60GB USB powered portable on the work machine that hold all my WAB stuff.
On top of all this I also have a 40GB flashtrax for back up in the field.

I killed my computer this morning G. knows how. I have spent the entire evening resetting it back to it's original factory settings.
It's like a new computer now

| | | Re: dead computer Crikey everybody is having comp probs and my laptop is whirring all of the time. I think it is about to die. I cant wait.
Work allows me to buy a computer or laptop or anything from Dell at a discounted rate and I can pay them back over a year.
This laptop is a works one and I am not supposed to have any personal stuff on it so work helps us out like that. Pretty cool really. I would like to buy a fat computer for all of my tunes and I wiould also like to get into mixing on my computer but need something powerful and will get involved with a nice Dell piece of kit I think |

My lightroom computer was custom built by gladiator in leicester based arround an AMD 64, 2gb ram, and a 256 GC which at the time was state of the art.
As soon as I get the cash together this baby is going back to the nice people at gladiator to have it mother board upgraded. I fancy a doubleheaded turion rig with 4gb of ram and a 512gc
A major advantage of using ext hds is that when it does go back I can plug them into my piece of cack IQON back up computer (bought from tesco on clearance for £80, and upgraded myself with used parts) and carry on till my shiny toys come back.

My sons have Dell laptops and PCs one is a software engineer and one is an IT consultant for Barclay's Capital so they have a bit more mony than I do, I worked in a coputer shop where we (not me) build computers to spec(I just help out now and then as I'm now retired) and I would recomend Dell

It is not Dell per se that I have a beef with but big manufacturers as a whole. They often dont have a good feel for what specialist users like photographers need so their boxes are one size fits all rather than bespoke. Having a rig built or building it myself enables me to put in exactly what I need and leave out that which I don't (for example my current light room rig has two internal hard drives one for programs and system and the other a 20GB is specifically registered to be the scratch disk for photoshop.) It also means I can specify the latency othe RAM, the precise mother board, case, GC etc I want.
Dell etc are commonly used by big firms to supply masses of computers which is why people like barclays capital use them - it doesnt neccesarily mean that they are the best choice for private users.
The other thing about some big manufacturers which p's me off and a lot of other IT people I know is that the computers come with marketing bots installed. These keep track of your cookies and inform the manufacturer of your Web habits - supposedly this allows them to offer you "better" suport and upgrades, but to my mind this is spyware, and is the first thing I delete if I am working on a main manufacturer rig.
I do pick up Dells, Tinys, Compaqs and other big names second hand sometimes but these are to play with, rebuild, or strip for parts. I wouldnt buy a big name new to be my main machine for all the tea in china.

I'm not one to argue. I think it could be a matter of opion.
My edest sone builds them too. He's a royal Engineer. He likes his Dell
I don't know if B C use Dell. but with two sons who write programs install and set up and are both software engineers etc I go with them. Mine is a cheep Packard Bell. I like it

I've got utilities that can rescue most hard drive failures..It's often no more than a bad sector that needs mapping out..so you can at least get some data back. |

Oh well!

Oh well! | It might be feasible to take the drive apart and put the disk guts of the drive into a working drives body. I agree its virtually certain that this would be prohibitively expensive to have done but you could have a crack yourself - i mean if the drive is otherwise dead what have you got to lose (apart from your temper )
pointers for doing this are to do it in as dust free environment as possible, to earth yourself to ensure you are not statically charged, and not to touch the disk parts with bare hands.
Ive done it once myself and the drive functioned (sort of) for a day before dying permanently but this gave me time to lift off and back up the important data.
see http://www.hackaday.com/entry/1234000840067578/ for more info on how someone with your problem solved it.
