| | | Shocking experience at the garden centre. To day I went for a walk around the local garden centre. I was looking to replace some lavender that have died as I planted them too early.
Anyway they sell chickens and ducks. In one cage there were about 7 mixed birds. Two ducks were eating the rear end of one of the chickens that was alive and cowering in a corner.
I felt sick so went to get the assistant. I went back to the cage I distracted the ducks and the poor chicken seemed to know I was trying to help it as it came towards me.
When the ducks approached I tapped the cage to distract them again they would not come near but the poorly chicken waited by the gate for the assistant to remove it..He said he would put it in a separate cage. I told him it needs a vet.
Haven't these garden centres have a duty to look at the animals on a regular basis, as I have no idea how long this was going on.. |

| | | Re: Shocking experience at the garden centre. Are you able to check back and see it's been sorted, Kayleigh? I once pointed out a very sick Rabbit at one of these antiques barn places, but none of the staff seemed remotely interested. It was while we were on holiday so I wasn't able to follow it up, but I still worry about how that poor animal went on. |

Letting them out will only cause more problems as the very busy A5 is right out side the gates. |

Its sometimes a problem you get with chickens apparently - I've heard that keeping a cockeral with them can help though I don't know if it would have the same effect with a duck..... |

You did the right thing in contacting the RSPCA Quote:

You don't normally carry a camera around a garden centre. |

Its upsetting for you to have to complain to garden centre and ask the RSPCA out but thank goodness you did , well done.

Annmaria | I know what you mean Annmaria. We have an old townhouse in Spain and just around the corner you can buy live Rabbits - for the pot. Takes a bit of getting used to.

| | | Re: Shocking experience at the garden centre. The RSPCA have just phoned me. They went out to see the garden centre people.
There were two hens that had been pecked.
The brown one I saw had been treated at the vets and the other had been treated for miner injuries with coletar. The RSPCA seemed to think everything is OK. They didn't mention a follow up..
But I will be keeping a close eye on the situation.
I still need some Lavender. |

Glad you'll be keeping an eye on them tho'.
