Oak is always out before Ash in my experience.

As the Blackthorn here is just getting into flower, Blackthorn Winter seems one to watch for.

Think I'll move South for the better climate.

Re: folklore sayings

a few from here, naer cast a cloot till may be oot. meaning the hawthorn or may tree be in blossom!. a rowan tree planted in your garden, will keep away witches, and if there is a lot of berries in autumn ,winter will be bad. a bird getting into your house is a sign of bad luck to come.

i remember saying the first one wrong in Scotland and pronounced it clout rather than cloot...leave that to your imagination!!
The last two are the answer to why things went wrong for em - a jackdaw came down the chimney here and i planted lots f rowan in the garden!!

Re: folklore sayings

If I remember correctly, the ash also had to be before the elm.

There are so many of these old sayings. Looking out of a rainy window, I am reminded of a local saying about rain coming in with the tide. And people would point out that it would stop raining at high tide, 5 or 6 hours from when it started. Somehow I think it is more to do with the fact that on average rain lasts for around 5 or 6 hours anyway, as a front crosses the country.

The local saying is "If you can see the mountains of Mourne its sure to rain and if you cannot see them it is raining!"

Re: folklore sayings

We may have missed it last year, but this year it will come around again.

"When apples are ripe
and nuts are brown,
it's petticoats up
and trousers down."

Alway loved Autumn.

Re: folklore sayings

Last year a group of trainee TV journalists came to the quay to 'interview' some of us and I got them with the 'its going to rain story'. I offered a bit of traditional weather lore. Look across the harbour, can you see the church on the hill; can you see the flagpole on top of the church. They carefully focused their camera on the flagpole. Then I told them the going to rain/is raining story.

You could see by their faces that they were young and guillable; and the obvious pain of their 'we've been had' expression.
