| | | Moving wood I have the oppertunity to get a lot of chestnut wood. Someone i know had to fell a tree. Some of it is cut up and otehrs can be cut by my friend but i need to move it myself to my house. I might have the loan of a friends horse box to transport it, but i have no idea how to get in on! Brute strength!?
Its going in my garden! To make a table and chairs and borders. I wanted a huge chunk for a table but i might have to make do with a sliver of wood on stumps. Anything else i could do with it? |

| | | Re: Moving wood Ask Kayleigh if you can borrow her husband to train, then get him to do it. Failing that Kayleigh could always move them as she is used to hard work |

| | | Re: Moving wood 2 things to bare in mind.
Firstly...cut logs are deceptively heavy...we had 2 large Sycamores felled this year and cut into foot long logs which i am slowly working my way through with a splitting axe for the log fire....however.. even a small looking log from about 2 thirds the way up the trunk weighs a tonne....as for the large diameter pieces from the bottom half of the tree? forget it...its as much as i can do to get them on their side and roll them to my cutting/axe spot on my own...and im a pretty strong/stocky guy
Secondly....with this in mind...and i KNOW a horse is REALLY heavy but you need to look at the weight capacity of the horse box and the estimated weight of each load of logs? you dont want to break any laws and you DONT want to break any friends horse boxes!!
But however you get round it all i wish you luck...wood is a lovely thing and i respect anyone who uses it in different ways wether to build with or to make wildlife habitats or to burn as heating

| | | Re: Moving wood Can I just issue a boring warning here amylou ? I've just spend the last 3 weeks barely able to walk and bend and this was due to over-enthusiastically moving a very large log pile, small logs but a few of them and next thing..... couldn't even put own socks on for a week Get a nice strong bloke to do it for you, they're usually much more well equipped. Failing that a few female friends and lift them together. Good luck hun

| | | Re: Moving wood Lol! Yes, well, be assured that i will not be trying to lift anything i shouldnt. I learned that lesson when i was 16 when i was helping my dad move chopped off branches and i pulled a muscle in my butt/thigh and it still hurts if i over do it today.
I have a strong OH And his dad. Also iv accepted that i cant get the huge big piece that i want. Shame but they are really heavy!
So we are going to take most of the already chopped up bits and make them into a border for the garden. There are bits that will make nice toodstool like seats and we will ask the greenkeeper if he could cut a slice off one of the larger bits and we can put that on top of some short lengths to make a table.
Its such a shame though as there is so much there that if i had any skill could be made into all sorts of furniture. I hate wasting wood and seeing it rot away. |
