Changing face of Britain

If you wasn't aware of this already I think you ought to take a look at this link.
http://new.edp24.co.uk/content/news/...A36%3A43%3A787

It is being put forward that a huge chunk of land around Hickling Broad is to be sacrificed to the sea. Six villages will be lost including Waxham and Sea Palling.

This is an incredible and adventurous plan and one that will have far reaching consequences.

What do you think of it?

Re: Changing face of Britain

It seems to be a discussion on what may have to happen in 20-50 years time. If we don't do it, then global warming will do it for us.
This seems a bit negative. Why don't they learn from the Dutch. The sea can be held back, but it'll take positive thinking and action probably starting now.

Re: Changing face of Britain

I wanted to place a link to a Times Online article but for some reason it kept timing out. In that article it explains more.

Even if we are talking 20-50 years time that isn't long to get the logistics of this idea in place as you are in fact creating a mass exodus on a large scale.

We are not only talking about uprooting whole communities but the businesses that are in that area such as farming, holilday lets etc. Then there are the new roads and communication networks that are going to need creating to service these new communities and business links.

Re: Changing face of Britain

As it is going to flood anyway it makes sense to control it somehow ?

Re: Changing face of Britain

The flooding will take place in time, so we have to sacrifice in advance by destroying communities (it is a matter of money again) while any dopey so-and-so that buys a home on a flood plain gets help from the government agencies
Holland shows what can be done if there is enough determination

Re: Changing face of Britain

The Dutch are planning to sacrifice land to their rivers, so there are limits to what even they can do. But we might take a leaf from their book and limit offshore aggregate dredging, at least.
