| | | Books as treasure! Hello
I thought I'd start a little thread here as I can image loads of us being complete bookworms. Even if it's wildlife reference books, it still counts
I was in London yesterday, visiting the Rodchenko exhibition at the Hayward Gallery. We also popped into The Photographers Gallery, which housed an excellent exhibition that I would recommend. Anyway, wandering around Embankment and South Bank, we found books stalls and a little book shop. I love browsing the old dirty and dusty books! Sometimes, I don't mind what is in the book, it's the actual item itself that is beautiful! Though if the content is good, result!
I came away from the day with two books and nothing over £14 spent. I found an original 1860 copy of 'The Province of Reason' which is full of Philosophical analogy and reasoning, which was interesting and I found a 1963 Collins 'Watching Wildlife' book! It's great! As I'm going to be trying my hand at Mammal and Bird photography, I thought this was a great find as it explains the best ways to get familiar with the animals!!!
I wanted to know if you guys have got any books that you wouldn't trade for the world and that just remain highly sentimental.
That reminds me, I've got a Signed Ewan Spencer (Big photographer) book which I got signed by him with a personal message

There's a few that I wouldn't let go of for sentimental reasons - My fathers LOTR set and the David Attenborough Zoo Quests, which were my mothers. I think along with that would have to be a Bill Copperthwaite book, some folklore / mythology ones and the Wiccan ones by Rae Beth.
That's not forgetting the much needed field guides of course...

| | | Re: Books as treasure! I collect antiquarian fishing books and theres a few of them I wouldnt part with.
However one in particular is special to me:
I have a copy of Izaac Waltons the compleat angler the edition was published in 1880 and was owned by a vicar from London,
He has inserted into the book his records of his visits to dovedale in the late 19th century .where much of the book referred to and early articles from the Times that referred to the condition of Waltons cottage and other fishing related items. There is also part of his own journal detailing his fishing in 1890. He has written on many pages with comments and notes and although I would never usually buy books that have been written in The beautiful handwriting and quality of the writing makes for fascinating reading, whenever I read it its like stepping back a couple of centuries.

| | | Re: Books as treasure! I currently have 1730 books (1732 when my latest order comes through). I periodicly have to give a few away to make room for new ones, but always find it incredibly difficult parting with any.
I could never part with any of my collection of pre-1900 fern books & catalogues - most of them have marvellous illustrations and wonderfully dated language. | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
