| | | Alternative Remedies etc I'n being nosey again folks !!
Just wondered if any of you use alternative remedies etc - not what you use them for but what sort you use and what you think of them. there are loads out there from herbalism and homeopathy, to colour therapy, reflexology, aromatherapy and various nutritional ones..the list is lengthy.
To me herbalism works - I use herbs and they work better than conventional medicines. Homeopathy and flower remedies I think have more of a placebo effect thing and i give them a miss - though i love the idea of flower remedies. I also think the placebo effect is interesting because it means, that to a certain degree, the body is able to heal itself. I also use aromatherapy a lot and when I was able to , can't now for personal reasons, i found that being on a raw food diet made me feel a lot better in myself, but then just being happy can do that because I know in 6 weeks I'm going to be bouncing all over the place, so.... anyway enough of that!
I'd really be interested to hear other peoples views on this subject.

| | | Re: Alternative Remedies etc Yeah i love herbs! I have a tincture that i take as i have a very sensitive tum. I dont eat any dairy products but other things make me a bit off and without my tincture i would be having a very bland diet indeed! But i very much believe in the power of herbs.
My mum is a qualified massure (sp!!?), reiki, aromatheray and reflexology person. She always tries to get me as a guinea pig but i hate anyone touching my feet so reflexology is out! |

Meadowsweet and honey is quite nice though Though after years of herbs, normal medicine - nasty hospital tests etc the one thing that's sorted it out is pure happiness and a lot of support
Oh yes and i also have your foot problem - lol I've a friend that's a reflexologist and she hasn't been able to manage it yet!! Sounds like a good mum to have!!!

I have always wondered about the placebo thing, perhaps we need some Shamans. |

The other thing is that you can turn down pain, sometimes, with visualization. There are various ways but the most common seems to be pretending your turning down a thermostat. If you can get in the right frame of mind it does work - as long as the pain isn't too severe..not managed it for back pain.

| | | Re: Alternative Remedies etc I've used herbal remedies all my life and homoeopathy since 1980. Also Bach flower remedies, Tissue Salts, and a host of other complementary stuff including visulisation and had some stunning successes with all. I quite simply would not be here today if I had needed to rely just on doctors and mainstream medicine - tho don't get me wrong - I have had my life saved with surgery too - its all got its place on this planet - its knowing when to do what or use which that is the clever part sometimes
My mum was a nurse (well still is technically speaking!) but has been a chiropodist and reflexologist for the past 30+ years. I too am a trained reflexologist but I don't practice.
I've also had stunning results with homoeopathy on my cats and occasionally injured birds and mice and I don't think animals react to a placebo effect - they don't know that you're treating them one way or t'other - they either get better if you've got it right or get more ill or die if you've not got the right rememdy or if they were too ill to treat in the first place ........... there's a story or two there for some time when there's nothing better to talk about! Personally I've seen it work so often that I don't have any doubts about its effectiveness in a very real sense.

| | | Re: Alternative Remedies etc I hadn't thought about the placebo effect not working on animals.... and thinking about it it worked on a friends dog, who had really bad glaucoma, where conventional medicine failed. So, maybe I need to rethink my views on homeopathy?

I have always wondered about the placebo thing, perhaps we need some Shamans. | With Dandelions on Warts you can see it taking affect straight away. The white milk turns the skin black and after a few applications makes the wart go very brittle and crumbles off with ease!
An open mind is the key to many a good thing!

Take off a leaf and inside is lovely cool gel, then rub it on anything sore, sunburn etc or just on hands. Gingko biloba for forgetfullness Valerian and hops to get to sleep, st johns wort to lift you up if you're feeling down. Kelp for iodine, spirulina (not a herb but an algae) very good for minerals etc. Peppermint tea and manuka honey for stomach problems. Flaxseed oil for some fatty acids, and hemp seed oil for suntan lotion!
My favourite herbs are coriander and basil, although I don't know what effects they have
and dock leaves for nettle stings. |

| | | Re: Alternative Remedies etc The vet gave homeopathic remedies to one of my goats years ago, she'd got liver fluke and bad mastitis - the remedies saved her life. My daughter has successfully used homeopathy for psoriasis, she found it tough going but successful.
I've used the Bach Flower remedies, I reckon they work on the emotional rather than physical level, but I found them helpful. (Though some of that could be put down to placebo effect - no way of testing that one!) |

There is a reason why chocolate makes you happy but I can't remember and I've left the book it's in round a friends - hopefully pick it up tomorrow and will let you know

I've never heard of hemp seed oil for suntan lotion before - does it protect your skin..like a block or...?
All honey has a certain amount of antibiotic action.
Coriander and basil are both good for the digestion

| | | Re: Alternative Remedies etc Yes I also use herbal remedies etc, these seem to be the only things that work on me too.If the kids fall over I give them arnica (spelling) if a bruise comes out I rub on an ointment (can`t remember the name). The kids seem to recover alot quicker and the bruises go away as quickly as they appeared. It really is brilliant,I`m sure the mental attitude helps in helping the body to heal the chinese, aboriginies etc have been using herbs and remedies etc for years there has to be something more to it.It is interesting that scientist are now investigating what properties the plants hold.Hopefully this will lead to many more cures and preventions. |

| | | Re: Alternative Remedies etc When on the odd occasion that I get a bunged up nose, I pour boiling water in a bowl over some dried lavender. The lavender helps unblock my nose...as well as the vapour from the hot water of course I also use Lavender to help me sleep at night. It's a great plant |
