| | | PC Problems You may, or may not, have noticed that I haven't been in WAB as much as usual lately. This is all down to ongoing problems I have been having with my PC for quite a while now.
It is in the hands of the repairers again, and has been for the most of this week. The end product might be that I will have to have the hard drive wiped clean.
This is compounded by my work which has now decided that the works computer can only be used before 9am and in our lunch hour only for personal use. All irrelevant sites are now filtered to stop access so I can't respond in the day like I used to.
I am not ignoring anyone or dragging my feet responding to anyone, it's just that I am having major problems at the moment.
Hopefully I will be up and running smoothly in the not too distant future.

| | | Re: PC Problems Mega sympathies John - I soldiered on until earlier this year with my old computer, which used up no end of time rebooting etc. Now I am sorted and the difference is immeasurable. Hope you'll be up and running on your own once again soon - don't you miss it when you can't surf!!

Hopefully I will be back online tomorrow. There's a few ideas the repair shop have come up with that they are testing out today and tomorrow morning. If it works I will pick it tomorrow afternoon.

If I wanted to upgrade mine it would have cost in excess of £180. In the end I had a new motherboard and a new memory stick. That still cost £95 but at least everything seems to be running ok at the moment.

In fact they hadn't sorted it out last time. The freezing up started up almost straight away after that first attempt at sorting it out. The PC went back again a few weeks later but still they couldn't find out what the problem was.
I returned it back to them this Tuesday morning and it was then they found out what the problems were and have now hopefully have fixed it.

| | | Re: PC Problems I just knew I shouldn't have said it but I'm afraid the old problems are still with me so I will have to take the PC back to the repairers on Tuesday.
The problem is that my PC continually freezes for no apparent reason. There isn't a virus anywhere on the system, so that's not the reason. It freezes inconsistently. It can run for hours without freezing yet at other times it can continually freeze. It can freeze up on boot up as well. It can freeze when there are no programmes open and it is just standing idle and it can freeze with any programme, not just one programme.
It has been in to two different repairers and it has baffled both of them. This latest repair I was told had fixed it, apparently not.
Oh well!! back to the drawing board.

John | Have you got enough sd or ddr Ram which ever you use, (they cant be used together). photos need a lot of ram and can bring the PC to hang if not enough memory, it could also be a clash of software.
Hope you get it sorted soon

Hope you get it sorted soon | Yes, I have enough of that. Regarding the software. They have checked out the system error messages and there is no consistency to them. It freezes any where and at any time.
This is way beyond me and so it has to go into the hands of the so called experts. If they can't find it what chance do I have.

John | John, without knowing more about your system (what version of Windows, what anti-virus etc) it's hard to be specific. There are various things that might be causing this but the first things that spring to mind are a problem with your anti-virus software or spyware on the system (anti virus progs won't always spot spyware). Unless you've got a laptop in which case the problem could be overheating.
Are you using Norton anti-virus? That is sometimes a bit of a beast and can cause problems. A decent free alternative is AVG
You may have spyware on your system. You wouldn't necessarily notice it but freezing is a problem these nasties can cause. There are several free tools you can use to clean up. AdAware Personal edition is easy to use. |

| | | Re: PC Problems If it's freezing on startup before windows opens, it sounds more like a hardware fault to me. Your cpu could be over heating maybe because of an incorrectly fitted heatsink and fan, this can easily freeze the system. Because you said you recently had a new motherboard and memory fitted, this could also cause freez ups. Make sure they updated your bios when they fitted these! They just maybe configured incorrectly! |

I have XP pro and also use AVG. The spyware aspect was looked at first and I do have Ad-aware SE personal loaded on my PC to help combat that already.

I can see that the end product will possibly a hard drive clean up but I didn't really want to go down that road if I can help it.

| | | Re: PC Problems I get problems with my anti virus and microsofts antivirus argueing but the strangest was a trial software that I kept in favourites I liked the program and bought it, from then on whether I used the software or not the computer hung up it took months then by accident rather than design I cleaned out the favourites and a few other little used programs and it ran fine again.

Unfortunately each time it freezes it generates a completely different error message. Because of this we can't pin down what is causing it.
