Canon cash back March to June.

For anyone contemplating changing or buying new Canon equipment, They've started a new cash back scheme.
There's some good deals as well, with £100 off a 40D, £45 off a 400D, and £150 off a 5D. The 100-400 L lens gets £75 knocked off.
Plenty of lenses and printers also qualify for the rebate.
These prices make it not worth buying from abroad now, as it has to be UK/Europe stock to qualify.
I'm pretty certain I'll be buying at least one of the items on offer, once I've decided once and for all which lens I'm going to get!

Don't be silly Graham...you know full well it expires in June. Like you'll have made a decision by then, and if you do, it'll be June '09

Come off it Graham, the day that your pictures can't match any others on the forum will be the time to start thinking about upgrading your kit, not a few bob off from Canon.

Oh, it's June 2008?? That's no good for me!

Actually, the moment is getting closer by the day, I've even ordered the TC's to go with whatever I decide upon!

Very good of you to say so, but to me they're not good enough. I've got a recent shot taken with an F2.8 lens that has blown me away with the detail, even when cropped it was simply awesome.
An F2.8 is definitely coming my way, I've just got to decide on which one. The Canon..gulp..or the Sigma, half a gulp!

Any chance of a look at the f2.8 picture Graham

Unfortunately it's not mine to show. I did ask if I could post it to show off the quality but the owner wasn't interested. The actual shot didn't look anything special at first glance, what impressed me was how well the detail stood up when cropped. I had a very similar sized picture of the same subject that at full size looked very much like it in subject size, light levels etc. but the difference close up was where you see the quality of the lens shinning through. Mine to be honest stood no comparison.

Re: Canon cash back March to June.

I can certainly relate to what you are saying Graham, I recently had a play with the Sigma 70 - 200mm f2.8 EX DG macro zoom and I was blown away with its quality, it was a fantastic lens, f2.8 across its focal range with a close focusing range of 1 metre at 200mm, it would make one hell of a good Dragonfly lens and dare I say it far more versatile than a prime macro, and still not too expensive at around £700.
Having said that I wouldn't part with my Sigma 150 f2.8 EX DG macro, the recorded fine detail is so sharp that you could cut yourself on it but I don't have to tell you that do I.

If money was no object I would buy the Sigma 120 - 300mm f2.8 EX DG zoom tomorrow, since having a serious play with this lens at last years bird fair it has left me in no doubt that this would be the ultimate multi-purpose wildlife lens, with or without the addition of converters.

In short, any lens that boasts f2.8 across the range is going to produce stunning results in the right hands, the only downside being that you have to part with serious amounts of wonga to get your hands on one!!

Re: Canon cash back March to June.

There's no way I'd swap my 150mm. F2.8 for anything. In it's range I doubt there's anything better.
I'll be honest, the ONLY thing holding me back from buying the 120-300 F2.8 is the fact I've never seen one let alone an image from one, at least not at full sized resolution.
It's a huge amount to spend on the say so of strangers!
Although I do have the seven day distance selling regulations to fall back on if I order one and find it not what I expected.
If I don't order one by tomorrow, I never will!! This indecision by me is so not my normal way, I normally gleefully buy whatever I want and often regret it later.

Well, Mr undecided has at long last taken the plunge.

I've ordered the 120-300mm F2.8. I decided not to use our Hong Kong friends. I found a UK supplier doing it at a very good price so I've opted for them.

Perhaps I'll get some sleep instead of worrying if I should get it.

I'm with you on that Graham, I have bought quite a few items of various value from Hong Kong dealers and up to now have never been let down but that doubt is still there, to the point of adding to my crop of grey hairs.

Good to hear you have finally taken the plunge Graham. I'm sure it won't disappoint.

Look forward to seeing the stunning shots that I'm sure you will get

Yep, I've had good experience in the past, but the price I got from the UK was within £50 of the import price, taking import duties into consideration. I know that Sigma are hot on seeing proof of import duties paid, plus if it's UK stock I get the extra two years Sigma warranty. All in all best to buy British in this instance.
I'm now considering getting a 40D to go with it! No need to wonder about anything else as I wouldn't consider getting a 1d Mk3 yet until this messy business with the AF is really sorted.
Even that Canon stalwart A Rouse has ditched them in favour of the Nikon D3, that really surprised me.

It was because I was so worried about you Nick that I've changed, I couldn't stand the competition.

I'll be keeping the Bigma initially, and probably permanently. It will all depend how I get on with the F2.8. I'll always have a high regard for the Bigma, it's served me well over the last two years. I only hope the new lens lives up to MY expectations!

Thanks Steve. Don't worry, you'll see them. I'll send you some full frame ones, once I've got some good enough, so it may take some time.
