Monkey park

Today on the way back from Stoke I passed a monkey park on right. Has anybody been and is it any good? I do like monkies. Is that how you spell it? Monkeys doesn't look right. Anyhow I would like to go and see the monkies but not if it is cruel to them. What do you think?

Re: Monkey park

It is 'Monkeys'. Whether the park is good or not I have no idea, never been.

Re: Monkey park

There is a place called Monkey World where (initially) Chimpanzees that were rescued from places like Spain and Turkey, where they were used as props by photographers there are chimps that smoked, used drugs ,or were just badly treated and are crippled in some way. They are kept as a family unit and some of them have never seen another chimp before the bonding puts humanity to shame. They are featured on television in a programme called Monkey Business on Animal Planet
sky channel 535 it is riveting a real tear jerker

Re: Monkey park

Oh I know Monkey World in Dorset .. my Mum adopted me three red ruffed lemurs one year! It's a lovely place although the gibbon enclosures are too small.

Re: Monkey park

It's Monkey Forest, at Trentham Gardens. Several acres of woodland have been fenced off, with Barbary Macaques (140 ish - they keep breeding) wandering around. No enclosures inside the compound, so the visitors and macaques mingle. The secondary aim is to return some of the stock back to wild populations, so that numbers at Trentham should remain constant, and ensuring survival in the wild. Last time I went, managed to get a small crowd excited about a nuthatch that was running up and down the tree there.

Also, Trentham is more than just that It's a mature wood with Fallow Deer, great spotted woodpecker, jays, barn owls. The river and lake are home to kingfisher, herons (one of largest colonies in england) cormorant and supposedly Otter (which I've yet to see!). The formal Italian Gardens are gold medal winners at Chelsea too.

Think I've covered it all! Admission to Monkey Forest is a fiver, the woods and lakeside walk are free.
Some of my shots from both Monkey Forest and Trentham are here http://carljervis.fotopic.net/c611285.html

Re: Monkey park

Might I suggest a visit on a weekday, rather than a weekend or bank holiday? We last went there on Good Friday - great weather, packed to the rafters. Trentham woods - kingswood, near the statue of the Duke of Sutherland, are full of bluebells too, right now.

Yep I was thinking in the week after work from Stoke Hospital. An early start and early finish and a trip to see the monkies. Fantastic

Ah, now that explains why our hospital trust is in debt lol. Which site you at? The old Royal Infirmary, or City General?

Re: Monkey park

Its basically Stoke on Trent. The road between Stoke and Stone, just off'f the junction 15, M6. Pretty easy to get to and looks like good fun so I will definitely be into it soon

the fact that we havent seen boddie for ages tends to indicate that he did indeed go - but they wouldnt let him out again

by the way for those interested in similar things cotswold wildlife park now has a big walk through lemur enclosure (one of these at monkey world too), while marwell has a walk through enclosure for its golden lion tamarinds.
