| | | Woodbury Common News on ITV1 today told a story of a super bug that can kill. Apparently a marine last year died and also this year a woman died who used to walk the commons with her dog. The theory is that when scratched by gorse they got a bad reaction and they are calling it the Woodbury rash. I often go on the common as you know and I have a habit of wandering off the paths when seeing fungi and getting myself lost. Now I am going to have to be very much more careful and make sure I am wearing protective clothes so I don't get scratched. They say that it is hard to detect when someone gets ill and there could have been more cases than we know of so I myself will be taking more precautions when going on the commons as you never know.
They said it is rare in this country but is often found in the Mediterranean So anyone in this part of the country who walks the commons please be careful.

It's called PVL and is very rare............believed to have been eradicated in the 1950's.
You will be perfectly safe on your walks across the Common. |

Yes I got muddled when I read about the marine and What they said today on TV.They said they thought that gorse might have been the culprit. The lady that died was someone my daughter worked with and I often get scratched so I am still going to be careful after all I dont just walk there I scramble about amongst bramble gorse and other unmentionables also I fall over roots and stones as well so it might be wise for me to be more cautious I am an accident waiting to happen I fell again today right on my bum.Slipped on seaweed AGAIN while watching seagulls battling against the wind and looking like there was an invisible barrier as they just stayed there in the same place

Fortunately I avoided landing on the cadaver tho
My volunteers gave me 9/10 for artistic interpretation, but only 4/10 for technical merit :-)

I would have made sure you were ok though whilst spluttering trying not to laugh

I know Woodbury common all too well from may days in the marines and spending allot of time training up there and crawling through Gorse, and worse. (The days before dog poo scoops) We were told that any cuts had to be disinfected throughly as the 'rash' would set in. The area does have a strange effect on cuts etc making them take longer to heal and sometimes get worse if not treated. We were told by our instructors that the rash was due to all the chemical testing they did on the common during and after the war which has leeched into the ground . Don't know how true that is but it made us look after our cuts etc.
Think you should be safe though unless you have a warped Sgt who makes you jump head first into a gorse bush for camouflage practice!!!.

Phil | No warped Sgt just a very clumsy me.Mine isnt head first ,it's a** first
I did it again today, parked scooter near public walk through the common.Got covered in mud on feet and bottom of trouser soaked as there were a lot of muddy puddles. That was ok but when I went back to bike I pushed it off the stand it hit a stone started to tip away from me and as I went to staedy it I lost my balance and sat right in stinging nettles and bramble.Luckily my waterproof coat quite long and protected me a bit but I did feel a few brambles to the back of my legs.Felt a right twit as it was on the main Littleham to Budleigh road, luckily I was stood up when the next line of cars came along
A walking disaster thats me

| | | Re: Woodbury Common Hello all! having found your excellent site! and woodbury common being one of my favourite places, i thought i would pose the following question, is it better to leave dog poo on the ground to be trodden in, or to put it in a dear little plastic bag and throw in the trees to take a thousand years to degrade? i cannot understand peoples mentality to spoil such a beautiful wild placehttp://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/forums/images/smilies/confused.gif ,take it home and put it in your bin after all it's you dog!
Thanks i feel better nowhttp://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif . kind regards to all common lovers, mickyb (exmouth) |

| | | Re: Woodbury Common One of the many good reasons for picking up your dog's toilet and putting it in a dear little plastic bag and disposing of it in the correct manner IE special dog litter bins , is because any puppies or dogs with worms who's toilet is left on foot paths and lawns can infect children ( who fall over and play on lawns)with TOXOCARA CANIS which causes blindness and it's about time the irresponsibles owners thought about this

| | | Re: Woodbury Common Hi Mickyb and welcome to WAB.
As Beryl says especially on Woodbury Common as it is so popular with families. The children just love to scramble in and out of bushes hide in holes and generally have a lovely time ,so it is essential that doggy poo is bagged and either placed in a doggy bin and if none available TAKE IT HOME.I get so angry when I see poo bags hanging on bushes and some that have been thrown up high to land on the higher branches of the tree.I just cannot understand the mentality of these people. Why go to all the trouble to pick it up and then throw it in the bushes. It just beggars belief
By the way do you live near Exmouth and Budleigh?

| | | Re: Woodbury Common I served in the Royal Marines for 35 years and 18 or so at Lympstone. The Woodbury Rash is not a new thing and Bootnecks (marines) have been aware of it for as long as I can remember. Marines don't just walk through the gorse they crawl through and then crawl through it some more. Nothing to worry about, more chance of an Adder bite I would say and we know how rare that is. | |
