New collins guide !!

Mmmmmmmmmm roll on April !
Just spotted this...appologies if its old news?

NHBS - Collins Butterfly Guide - Tom Tolman and Richard Lewington

Also i seem to remember posting about the similar Collins wildflower guide when i first joined WAB ...its the same as this but with a red poppy on the front...that must be due this year too i reckon?

I see they have also updated the bird guide as mine doesnt have a tern on the cover?

Re: New collins guide !!

This is just an updated book that's already been out, but there is a new UK butterfly book due (can't remember the details)- I thought not another one as there have been so many, but this new one is supposed to be more complete with all races/forms illustrated, so could be interesting.

Re: New collins guide !!

I've got an earlier edition of this guide and it's brilliant, Richard Lewington's pictures are great as always and overall the guide's proved very useful when I've been elsewhere in Europe.

Re: New collins guide !!

Dan's post reminded me to check my butterfly book, it's the Collins (Higgins and Riley) edition from 1980 Way out of date, may purchase the new one then, looks good. I feel so old.

Re: New collins guide !!

There is this one that is either newly out or very close to being published that sounds good:

Adrian M. Riley "British and Irish Butterflies: The
Complete Identification, Field and Site Guide to the Species,
Subspecies and Forms"

That's the book I referred to, but couldn't remember the details- I might just have to add another butterfly book to my shelves!

Re: New collins guide !!

I have just seen a first review (from yesterday May 2nd) of the eagerly awaited Collins Butterfly Guide...and it is VERY critical and says the book is simply a re-hash of the original and hasn't even been updated!!

Here is the Amazon Link to the book and review:
Amazon.co.uk: Reviews for Collins Butterfly Guide: The Most Complete Field Guide to the Butterflies of Britain and Europe: Tom Tolman,Richard Lewington: Books

Has anyone else got a copy yet....what's your opinion?

It was on my 'Wish List', but its now been removed!

Re: New collins guide !!

I have had since the early 80's " A Handguide to the Butterflies and Moths of Britain and Europe" Treasure Press.
Someone bought it for me after we found a elephant hawk moth caterpillar in the garden and didn't know what it was so took it to the museum where they ID'd it for us.
I was very lucky to find a copy in very good condition in a charity shop last year as my original was in pieces.

I like books with illustrations

I seem to remember this projected title being cancelled somewhere along the line.

Re: New collins guide !!

Mine arrived last week. It's first rate and gives much more information on each species than other guides I have.
