| | | Good smells/Bad smells The countryside throws up some good and bad smells this time of year and into the summer. I adore the smell of apple blossom and stand under our tree sniffing it for ages. However there is one fragrance I can't stand, well 2 actually........privet and oil seed rape. Yuk! Anyone got favourites or dislikes? By the way, farm smells are ok by me. I reckon they're good for the lungs! (My opinion) ww |

| | | Re: Good smells/Bad smells Stink horn fungus is really bad, but not as bad as a voo doo lilly a customer had in their garden, yuk. Also gatwick airport smells bad if the wind is in the wrong direction. Low tide in an estuary can be bad. Smells I like are ramsons, waterfalls, fog in fields, cut grass, daphne o dora and yellow azalia. May add more..................Jon
Oh yes bracken, love that smell |

I can not think of any bad ones particularly but I am sure they are out there!

| | | Re: Good smells/Bad smells The smell of a scared Stoat/ferret/ Weasel - a defence mechanism, very pungent and somewhat like a skunk I would presume. Makes your nose curl-up - I know this to my expense! |

| | | Re: Good smells/Bad smells I love the smell of: Gorse; fresh-cut grass; Tomato plants (in moderation); mudflats/seashore at low tide.
I hate the smell of: air "fresheners"; petrol fumes; our local sewage works - when the wind is in the northeast, a plume of noxious emanations spreads across the river into my bedroom window, so pungent you can almost see it. Quote: |

| | | Re: Good smells/Bad smells good smells:
Spring (I'm sure you can smell it!), nettles, elder, honeysuckle (especialy if you smell it growing wild in the woods even before you can see it), rotting leaves, sweet vernal grass, gorse, christmas trees and satsumas, bluebells, smoking tyres and drag racing (sorry not very WAB I know...).
bad smells:
Dead things, the strange smell an abandoned warehouse has- maybe damp and rotting concrete? The smell of something burnt years ago and probably pig poo. |

| | | Re: Good smells/Bad smells Gorse and newly cut lawns do it for me too. Another I haven't smelled since childhood, but would recognise immediately - my Gramps chicken feed down in the barn (don't know what gave it that distinctive smell but it had a kind of reassuring fragrance for a child).

Tink | Oh you've reminded me! - the smell of pure beeswax or really good honey because of my grandad's honey shed (he kept bees) where he separated out the wax and jarred up the honey and his pipe smoke.... |

| | | Re: Good smells/Bad smells Good - I love oil seed rape right about now (not when it smells like cabbage), I love the blossom on horse chestnut, gorse, bluebells, lilac, cut grass, wisteria, honeysuckle, jasmine, phlox .. all the scents that make most people feel sick because they're so heady. I love ylang ylang and patchouli too. Bad - slurry, oil seed rape when it goes cabbagey.

| | | Re: Good smells/Bad smells We have a lovely yellow azalia flowering at the moment which has a lovely smell. Best of all is the jasmine on a summer evening - we leave the windows open specially so that the perfume comes into the house. Does anyone know why it only gives off its scent in the evening?

| | | Re: Good smells/Bad smells Yes I can imagine that there are some nasty niffs in the theatre. Rotten bits and bobs and things.
Went out today and got a new big bag of hay for my Rabbits. Now that's a lovely smell. I should think sleeping in a hayloft with that smell would send you off quickly. mmm
And my wisteria is lovely at the moment.mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmww |

| | | Re: Good smells/Bad smells My favourite smells include mint, gorse is another and the smell of rain after its been dry for a while. A freshly opened bottle of beer smells good as well, if anyone knows what i mean.
Bad smells definetly include Petrol, which just makes me want to gag! Even thinking about it makes me upset. Rosemary to me, i can't stand the taste and every time i smell it just makes me want to move away. |
