Could I suggest a little light gardening, as an appetiser?

| | | Re: where are you going for holls? To the Auvergne region in France on the trail of La Bête of course!
(For more on La Bête and for the benefit of those into cryptozoology: La Bete the killing Machine of France, 230 years ago)
Apart from that aspect, I love to see their ubitiquitous not-so-mini beasts, such as praying mantis, the beautiful coloured grasshoppers which flutter up in cascades as you walk through the grass, even the huge wasps (hornets?) getting sloshed on ripened fruit...the lizards (and snakes) which are everyday occurences there, but I am riveted to the spot in fascination whenever I encounter them . In the evening we take walks and enjoy having the bats dive bombing us, just missing our heads (which probably only happens because we have attracted mossies!)
While I'm at it, I wonder can anyone recommend a book on French fauna and/or flora? Specifically to this region of France if at all possible - oh and unfortunately...it would have to be in English
D.
