Dead Horses

This is awful.

Operation saves neglected animals.
A huge animal rescue operation has been taking place in Buckinghamshire after RSPCA officers found scores of neglected horses, ponies and donkeys.

Re: Dead Horses

That's awful. It always makes depressing reading. I think this sort of thing is sometimes down to people taking on too much and not asking for help. It can be avoided.

Re: Dead Horses

Hi,

I think you'll find this site belongs to gy, er... people who move around a lot, and leave the horses to fend for themselves, they generally take great pride in their stock, and the horses change hands for lots of money,

Max.

Re: Dead Horses

This is totally disgusting. I sold my horse as I could no longer give her the time she needed. It broke my heart but it was the best for her. There is no need for this.

Wasn't she just gorgeous..

Re: Dead Horses

Aye no animal deserves to be maltreated. Seems a shame people allow thing to get in such a state.

Not being picky now, ah well actually i am gypsies tend to care for their animals, because of their way of life. Its other 'travellers' that give them their bad reputation, tinkers i think they are refered to.

Re: Dead Horses

I think you've hit the nail on the head. Someone buying up horses to sell in countries where horse meat is a delicacy (and a profitable one) but then having difficult in exporting the beasts probably? Who sold him the horses is my question? Are horses licensed/registered? I think not ....

Re: Dead Horses

The horses are sold at horse markets for meat, the foals or small ponies sometimes go for less than £5. The price of feed, hay and Straw has gone through the roof this year due to the summer rains. So we may see more of this type of cruelty going on as the hay and straw they have in store runs out.

Re: Dead Horses

I don't know about that but note that one of the charges was assaulting a policeman - that could lead to the nearest thing to hell on earth!

Probably.
How many animal lovers get imprisoned, I wonder? I suspect that most people in prisons (voluntarily or not) wouldn't really be concerned?

Re: Dead Horses

What I can't understand is why nobody reported the condition of the horses before they all died. Surely somebody must have seen it.

Re: Dead Horses

Saw this on the late news - what an appalling case (possibly the worst of its kind to date?). Words fail me - I just hope the perpetrator of such cruelty gets his/her just desserts and not a 'slap on the wrist' type punishment .

Re: Dead Horses

Sounds like this was one of the worst cases ever, there's no excuse for the sort of cruelty, it's worse than neglect, it was deliberate. The farmer : Mr Gray must be the vilest creature, hope he gets what's coming. Sadly the punishment for animal cruelty is never enough but I should think assulting the copper hasn't done him any favours.
I think the farm had been named before and it was another tip off from the public that caused this to be discovered. I wish the RSPCA were given more legal rights to take more direct action.

BBC NEWS | England | Arrest after 32 dead horses found

If these animals were for meat I presume they would have been exported? I know there is a slaughter house in the west that kills horses - i suppose they end up in dog food? Never see horse pedigree chum though do you? Appalling live animal exports are still going on although you don't hear much about about it anymore. The animals must be terrified and most probaby treated dreadfully. The figures appear to be dropping. Can't see horses listed on the figures. I know a lot of the 'wild ponies' like on exmoor were destined to be exported for meat. A lot of continental meat such as salami has donkey and horse in it. I suppose in the end it's no different from eating other animals, but there's something about donkeys..they're so gentle and sweet.

Defra, UK - Animal health and welfare - Animal welfare - During transport - Export stats

I don't agree with eating any animal. If an animal is treated like a pet you realise it is individual and has a character of it's own and possesses emotions. If they are unloved and treated without compassion they are not viewed as living creatures as most farm animals are. I had horses as a child and love them like I love any animal. I hope you keep yours til the end of it's days so it doesn't end up as dog food or salami as most do.
