How many mice?

I've just bought my fourth computer mouse in five years (the others just wore out through left clicking), making them unpredictable in use. Anyone else getting through these devices at a similar pace?

Re: How many mice?

Got a feeling I might regret saying this but i've had this mouse for about six years and use it a lot! I clean inside it every six months or so though, just to keep it running smoothly.

Re: How many mice?

Me too...have only ever owned one mouse and have been using it for donkeys years but i regularly clean it out.

Incase you have never done this you just twist off the bottom and let the ball fall out....give this a wipe over...then have a bit of a blow inside the mouse...you will see lots of built up fluff, dirt and gunk on the 4 little white wheels inside...its a tricky little job but you have to kind of rotate each wheel and scrape off the gunk with your nail as you do it...once all 4 are done have another blow and shake it upside down so any debris falls out then re assemble the ball and bottom...it will feel brand new..

oh and dont forget to clean off the bottom of the mouse...the little nylon pads get gunked up and cause friction...clean these off and it will whizz around your mousemat like a rocket !

Re: How many mice?

Hi people,

Chuck away the ball mice, and for not too much you can get an optical USB one that really hardly needs cleaning, on the old ones it's not just cleaning the ball it's using a pin or something to take all the fluff etc. off all three rollers or little cogs.

Max.

Re: How many mice?

Max,

The ball mouse was the first to go! I've used optical mice for 4 years, but it's the micro-switches that always give up, in my experience. The most recent problem being that a single left-click had the effect of a double-click, so when hitting the back button in a web browser, it would take me beyond the page I was after. It still functioned OK using photo editing software, but was driving my bonkers for all other applications. I'd tried switch cleaner etc., but it was having none of it!

Re: How many mice?

I use a roller ball. With a large ball on the top. You don't need a mouse mat either. I prefer this type.

Re: How many mice?

Two ball mice, horrible things, now on the second microsoft optical in approx twenty years.
Have you tried a gamers mouse these seem to be a lot tougher and have other programmable buttons like the Logitech MX510

Re: How many mice?

Nightshade,

dead right about the ball mice.

Richbrew have you mouse s/ware, sometimes you can adjust the double click speed, but would'nt think there's much wrong with the switch as it double clicks, normally it won't click at all if it's faulty.

Tried a trackball, darn thing, I kept trying to move it.

Max.

Re: How many mice?

Yes, Max,

I tried all the tricks I knew before condemning the mouse, but it still wouldn't behave itself. Anyway, I've replaced the offending item, and the problem is solved. Thanks for your input.

Re: How many mice?

Dan,

I appreciate your concern over the environmental impact of the mousefest that I'm indulging in, but the ball mouse that arrived with my first computer (a PC) got short shrift indeed. I soon got fed-up with scraping all the gunge from the innards and moved on to an optical device. It's a component failure (micro switch) that caused the pandemonium with my most recently deceased unit, and I'm blowed if I'm going to poodle-about with a soldering iron in an attempt to rectify the problem (insert winking emoticon here).
