| | | Re: Non wildlife interests? I spend a lot of time travelling around with my wife in our motorhome. Enjoy visiting churches for their architecture and stained glass. Woodworking - I'm building up a workshop in the cellar. Archaeology of course - surveying mostly. Reading, watching films. Canoeing - my wife and I have 15 ft open (Canadian) canoes, great for canoe camping. Walking, have to because of the dog, but particularly high level routes such as can be found in the Lakes. Used to be a mountain rescue team member and search dog handler, but I'm too old for that now. |

Rock music & live gigs
Rugby union - Leicester Tigers
Football - Leicester City (god help me!!)
Metal detecting & archaeology
They are all brilliant fun but have increasingly been pushed well into the background by Wildlife photography in the last few years.
There's a warning in there somewhere, buy a DSLR and lenses at your own peril, its highly addictive and will consume you totally

| | | Re: Non wildlife interests? Music.....A major interest and influence in my life. Led Zep being the major band, also anything from Metallica, Slayer, Tull, Wisbone Ash, Black Sabbath, Blues etc. I also play Bass guitar.
I also have an interest in Celtic mythology, some aspects of wicca and magiks and how the sun and moon can affect our lives.

A good music selection yourself if I might add.

| | | Re: Non wildlife interests? Another metaller here too although most of the stuff I listen to is a bit more extreme than Slayer I occasionally dabble with guitars but cant play for very long these days due to arthritic hands Also occasionally mess about with recording tracks too. Photography takes up most of my free time though, its such a vast subject theres always new stuff to learn/discover

| | | Re: Non wildlife interests? I wouldn't say I'm a metal head. More of a cheesy rocker.
ACDC, Aerosmith, Faces, Led Zep, Whitesnake, The Who, The (early) Stones, ZZ Top, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Zodiac Mindwarp - that sort of thing. Anything BUT Pink Floyd...
I really enjoy gigs when I can go, not only dark, sweaty seedy rock gigs but also outdoor gigs and festivals. I've been to Glastonbury half a dozen times but not recently mind...
Trying to be a bit more er... grown up now, and learning about classical music, but rock is where my heart is.
Also dig the blues (why dya think I like the early Stones and early Led Zep?!), but as well as more famous names such as John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy and BB King, I like the more recent stuff like Joe Bonamassa.
Also have a soft spot for Soul and Funk, especially things like Rufus Thomas, Lou Rawls and Jackie Wilson.
I also love quite a lot of Scottish folk music, (I should do I suppose!) - Reels especially.
Other interests - massive supporter of Bristol Rugby Club, (go and see as many games as I can - not enough as far as I'm concerned, but am often in my Kilt at Twickenham or Murrayfield at the Calcutta cup if nothing else), enjoy running, swimming (in the sea as often as I can, or rivers) and cycling to keep fit, drawing and painting with acrylics, visiting art galleries small and large, ancient history, especially Egypt (but not "pyramidiology"), visiting lighthouses (I find them inspirational for some unknown reason), and trying to learn and speak foreign languages when abroad.
Love standup comedy also. Bill Bailey, Ross Noble, Ardal O Hanlon, The Big Yin - pretty mainstream I suppose, but really enjoy finding new live acts also.
Used to be heavily into golf too, (wasn't half bad), but haven't really picked up a club since getting with my girlfriend (now fiancee).
I have a sneaky suspicion that many of my (and her) interests will be taking a back seat this year, for wedding planning..... (not really my idea of fun)!
Above ALL those though is just getting outdoors as often, and for as long as I can. Cooking, eating and sleeping outside. Camping, walking, and now, a little photography...
Thats me.
ps. Tigers???!!! Fourwings? Tut tut tut...

| | | Re: Non wildlife interests? I don't know what type of music I'd paired you up with Paul but it wasn't metal!! Well if we're talking music I'm very eclectic... folk various but more singer songwriter than trad (though I do like Christy Moore) Vin Garbutt, Steve Tilston, early Fernhill and early Gjallahorn, Jim Page (not Jimmy Page) and John Gorka etc. Then Jethro Tull, Pentangle, Steelyeye Span, Sandy Denny etc - and... Stevie Ray Vaughn, Hendrix, Pogues, 70's punk bands, Neil Young....New Model Army (early stuff, lost track over the years)...on the quieter notes John Renbourn, Pierre Bensoussan and some classical. Back to loud I used to like Theatre of Hate etc and there was also a band that used to support them called Einsturzende Neubauten (something like that anyway!) - not sure how to describe then extreme metal x punk? and on the first gig i went to made the mistake of being under the front left speaker (the pneumatic drill came through it) and nearly got decapitated by the axe that the lead singer was wizzing over heads at the front! I used to go to a pub in London called the Intrepid Fox (with best friend Vicky) it was (think it closed down) a great pub, lots of skull, cobwebs and candles etc (but not done in a tacky way ) and they played mostly various kinds of metal - we used to get cheap tickets to alternative music nightclubs from there too!

I thought I had a photo of the s/s bird table ( easy clean coz it dismantles so you can scrub the base ) but it has gone missing, that was a triumph as it is effortless to put back together too!!!
The list also includes nesting material cages, ground feeders, offset squirrel baffles oh, and I also make the old fashioned flower baskets that look like hay baskets for horses. (these are aluminium as they require no painting or maintainance)
It's a shame I have to work full time coz if I had a quid for the amount of times someones asked that I,d be a rich lady!!!!

| | | Re: Non wildlife interests? At my age I can only bang on about the lapsed catagory :-
1960s = Playing senior football, motocross racing 125cc, ferreting, also in an awful band, but we had a good drummer.
1970s = Dont remember an awfull lot about the 70s I drank alot, fell over alot and the band stopped asking me to turn up. Seem to remember taking up photography.
1980s = Spent most of my time racing, falling off (2 strokes you see) and rebuilding several motor cycles at various track venues over the country. Started water sking. (didnt fall off so much)
1990s = Class 2 off shore power boat racing, won some cups. O.C.R racing won some cups. and a bit of sea fishing (no cups) Lots of water sking, must have taught over 100 pepole to ski.
2000 = Started off o.k. done alot of m/cycle touring bought an old 30ft. fishing boat. Then unfortunatley had a year of chemotherepy and had to listened to eveybody telling me to give up everything exept for short walks, so I bought a camera and do short walks, well, sometimes short. (still sneak out on the bike when everyones at work)
Hobbies come and go but wildlife was allways a big interest, even more so now.
Regards
Rob

| | | Re: Non wildlife interests? Other than wildlife my biggest passion is popular music + over the years collected a mortgage load of CD's + before that records (remember them?). Stuff from 1940's to current stuff like Amy Winehouse, the Feeling. Love all sorts from likes of Ella Fitzgerald/ Sinatra, et al to soul/blues, some reggae, some country, jazz, latin, many AOR stuff like Springsteen/Eagles/Petty/Jackson Browne, singer-songwriters such as Paul Simon, Carole King, Joni Mitchell + some good old rockers from ZZ Top, Whitesnake,Deep Purple+ good general pop from Buddy Holly-Beatles-Eurythmics- Madness, etc.
Probably all time favourite singers include Bonnie Raitt, Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye, Aretha + too many to mention.
Enjoy crime dramas on TV + comedy series like Father Ted, Frasier + not many currently.
Gardening- though always with wildlife in mind!
Travel as much as possible, although again always to see lots of wildlife, so possibly doesn't count. |

| | Re: Non wildlife interests? I used to fence,
Up to the age of 59, I was treasurer and a co-founder of Deal Fencing Club, I designed the club badge and had it sanctioned by the town council because it consisted in part ,of the Deal Town Coat of Arms, I fenced in competition in France , Holland and some county matches, Mostly Foil and Epee never did like Sabre much altough I did when needed, all in all about 7 or 8 years
I damaged my wrists using a Quadrant type wire rope cutter, the pawl didn't drop in correctly and I came down with straight arms on the handle of the machine, Didn't break anything but for weeks I could hardly pick up a cup of tea never mind a foil, so, I kind of slid backwards , not attending meetings or club nights, until I stopped going altogether.
Sold all my gear, bought walking gear and the wife and I headed off to the hills , Hellvellyn , Kinder Scout, Red Pike, Hadrians wall ect, getting older now and down on the flat stuff, Nature Reserves, RSPB sites You know what I mean, and now I'm into WAB and enjoying your company I look forward to meeting some of you at wherever , meets , or nature reserves,
I better stop waffling now and see you soon.

| | | Re: Non wildlife interests? Another Tull fan here - this is getting spooky! And I like female vocalists.
My hobby is also my job, so I'm very lucky: I write fiction and have had three novels out over the past three years. I'm a member of two writing forums and I go to a lot of writing-related events. I'm a big reader!
- I also go to a women's gym three times a week, and thoroughly enjoy that.
- Next month I'm going to start helping out with my local Beaver group (the kids, not the animals).
- I collect vintage Ladybird books and vintage dolls' house furniture.
That's it! |
