While it is the time of year when we think of new beginnings I was wondering if anyone knows of any superstitions regarding wishes? I know it's bad luck to tell anybody your wishes. these are the only ones they can think of - anyone know if any of them work?!
Blowing out candles on a cake
A shooting star
Catching a feather
upon seeing 8 magpies
burning an onion.

Never heard of the burning onion one. Do you have to do it deliberately? When I burn onions I generally just wish I hadn't! 
Catching a falling leaf before it hits the ground is another I've heard. |

Ah - thanks for that Nick
I think the onion one comes from an old custom of hanging an onion in the room of a sick person (it was thought to draw the illness away) and then afterwards it was burned - i guess with a wish for the illness not to return.
