There's some very strange people out there! | Don't Eskimos do this too? I used to belong to a LETs scheme BBC - Action Network - Local Exchange Trading Schemes LETS - interested?which isn't exactly getting something for nothing, but means you have a barter system of goods and services without money changing hands, it can work quite well. Although you can end up with a surfeit of apples changing hands. |

I'm a member of a few local freecycle groups but I've not rummaged through supermarket bins, yet. I have thought about it but haven't plucked up the courage to do it.
There was a story in my local paper last year about how some supermarkets were clamping down on freegans by locking bins or putting bins in secure areas.

| | | Re: Freegans... I have been known to check out the odd skip and "bin dive". If someone is throwing something away I'll at least ask for the plug etc.
I have just checked out and signed up for freecycle - a great idea.
I've never drunk my own pee - and I am not advocating it but as a biochemist - The "idea" is to only drink your first urination of the day. Due to osmosis the body (via the kidneys) excretes a number of useful electrolytes and minerals. Interestingly urine is sterile unless you have a UTI (urinary tract infection).
Maybe during a finger buffet you have inadvertently sampled some of your friends That's before you Poo Poo the idea
As for being a Freegan - I don't think I'm dedicated enough but fair play to those that are. Waste not want not and we humans waste WAY too much.

| | | Re: Freegans... I think last nights WIFE SWAP summed it up perfectly.
Whilst freegans are happy to have the NHS pay for their dental and healthcare treatment and taxpayers pay for schooling they are unwilling to put anything back into society.
Does not seem fair to me.
If they want to find themselves an island and live self sufficiently then fine but not whilst I am paying 40% to prop the freeloaders up |

| | | Re: Freegans... that might be a bit extreme boddie no?... I think a lot of 'freegans' are people who work the same as everyone else, but don't believe in wasting huge amounts of food that gets chucked out of supermarkets on the sell-by date. The food is usually fine, but can't be sold or donated to charity because the sell-by date makes that illegal. They get good food for free, but that doesn't mean they don't work\pay taxes like everyone else.
